Adblock on iOS store - worth the money?

I need to ask about Adblock. I have used for years Adblock Plus on Mozilla Firefox webbrowser and it has worked superbly. It kills 90-95% of all advertizing. However the Adblock Plus content blocker for iOS Safari is somewhat disappointing. There are many ads that it does not block, especially the extremely annoying floating ads.

I see that Adblock (which is $1.99) has 25,000 reviews which are almost all positive. I am a bit leery of using it though because I never heard of it. Mozilla is an organization that I trust so if they trust Adblock Plus then so do I. However, Adblock is new to me.

Is it a full fledged browser or is it a Content Blocker? Is it as effective as the reviews claim? Safari says that content blockers do not send your browsing data to the the blocker's servers, also.

So what is the situation for Adblock? thanks

I used it, it works, but when I used it in Safari I was still getting ads despite unchecking the Allow Acceptable ads button. 1Blocker is much better for both Safari and iOS AND it gives you the ability to sync your locking rules as to what you wanna whitelist and the list blocking rules that you selected.

AdGuard for iOS is free and works great. Also, don’t rely on positive reviews alone, positive reviews can be purchased on the cheap.

1Blocker x is what you want. Adblock on ALL platforms has an ’acceptable ads’ policy. Which is why you still see some ads

Was using 1Blocker X but it doesn't work well with the new macOS or iOS. The dev said he had a major update coming but it's been another month and no update other then a comment saying he now doesn't know a time table. So I gave up on waiting. That seems to be the biggest issue with applications these days, you buy and updates take way to long or don't come at all. As a developer myself, I just do not understand why it takes so long for people to get their own stuff updated properly? So now I'm looking for a new adblocker.. I should just write my own at this point.

There's Firefox Focus that is free (among a number of other free and fairly good content blockers).

There's Firefox Focus that is free (among a number of other free and fairly good content blockers).

Thanks I wasn't aware of Firefox Focus - but why have a separate mobile browser?

It works as a privacy browser too (if someone wants to use it), in addition to just being a content blocker.

Browsers can really only work within the iOS framework, so whatever iOS restrictions might exist, an app (like a browser) can’t really just bypass them.

I've been using DNS cloak to block all in game ads possible and it works like a charm and free. Not sending info server side either like the Luna one.

If you want to stay with Safari on mobile, I really like 1Blockr X.

Seems like there was an update not too long ago. Even without updates it still seems to work just fine and do its job.

Was using Adguard and that works well but no iCloud sync. Starting using 1Blocker and liking that better especially since there is iCloud sync and it works with Safari on macOS. Like that it allows custom rules as well as cookie blocking. Since I had purchased their legacy app the pricing is good plus first year free trial. Since I do a lot of custom element blocking, iCloud sync is very important to me.

I’ve just switched to the DuckDuckGo privacy browser. It doesn’t always work 100% but it’s damned near good enough for my needs. You can whitelist and report broken sites so with enough feedback it will improve. I have been using DuckDuckGo search engine for many years now.

I am fed up with buying an app, and the dev then switching to a subscription based model. I have been burned twice with 1 Blocker. First when he made the app legacy and launched “X” ... one month later (after purchase) the pricing on “X” was changed to a sub model!

I agree with that but if you read his Twitter we are grandfathered into free updates via app updates. But not real time updates via the cloud. I’ll stick with it for now.

I understand the frustration around everything going subscription, but for me it's a case by case basis. In the case of 1Blocker, I too purchased the legacy app. As a result, I get 1 *year* free trial of premium, and then it is $4,99/year. I have no problem paying $5 per year for an app that is regularly updated and providing useful functionality for me. If Adguard ever gets iCloud sync across its platform and remains free, I may give it a look. But for now I am very happy with 1Blocker.
