add more ram?

I have a macpro desk top 2.66Ghz dual core with 5GB of ram. Running the newest photoshop is slow. Should i have more ram? Will this increase performance of my mac? If not, what else can i do to help the speed?

After a day of typical usage, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory* tab and look for Page Outs and Swap used and report back.

5GB is defintely going to limit you. I had 12GB in my old MP, and even with that I was getting 5-10% pagouts. I have 24GB in my new one and have had zero pageouts since I got it a month ago. I would say go with 16 GB RAM and get an SSD to use as a boot drive/scratch disk.

i decided to get the owc 240gb ssd...then maybe add to more sticks of ram in my remaining slot

Yeah. 5gb is pretty low these days. Upgrade your ram and get an SSD.

I asked the same question a little while age. Did the Ram, then the ssd, then the cpu. Def faster, but not like a new computer

If we're talking about a 1,1, ram is quite expensive. If it's a 4,1, go to 16GB and enjoy, as you can get that amount of ram around $100 on the 4,1. If you're working on large files, you can use it. If you like it to maintain many history states + thumbnails and other cached elements with large files, you can use large quantities of ram. You can see gains past 16GB too, but at that point it starts to really depend on your workflow. If you're only running photoshop, even with big files that tends to grant decent performance.

Even doing light duty work, i definitely noticed the difference betwen 4gb and 8gb on my MBP. RAM is cheap, buy as much as you can afford. Currently the sweet spot in terms of $/gb is around 16gb.

DDR3 RAM is cheap*

DDR2 is still comparatively expensive.
