"Add to Up Next", "Play Next" do the same thing

The title says it all. Apple Music supposedly has the most awesome feature I have requested for iPhone, Beats, ect. for a long time: the ability to see, add, modify what's going to play next. It is so intuitive, when I'm in the middle of an album and know what music I want to hear when the album is done I can select the music, hit the ... and click "Add to Up Next" to add the music to the bottom of my list, or if I want to instead interrupt that album with a song I thought of on a whim I follow the same steps but click "Play Next" instead to add the music to the top of my list. But no! Both buttons do the same thing. They both add the new music to the top list. That is, when I click "Add to Up Next" I get the icon that shows it going to the bottom of my list, but when I check it's actually been added to the top, identical to the behavior of "Play Next". I thought maybe I'm crazy but I looked up this link (http://www.theapplepips.com/how-to-use-up-next-in-apples-new-music-app/) that explains the way it should work. But it does not work like that for me. I reported this to Apple Feedback the first day I had Apple Music. Until they fix it, does anybody have a solution or see correct behavior of the "Add to Up Next" button?

The behaviour you describe is the correct one. If you're just playing an album (instead of adding it to up next) it is not part of the "up next" queue.

You'll see the songs you added to that queue, then followed by "then return to album" when you go into up next.

"Add to up next" adds it to the end of your queue.

So to get the behaviour you want, just add the album to up next, and it'll all work.

My next try was to start with a clean Up Next, then go to the first album I want, and instead of just hitting the play triangle I hit "Add to Up Next", which did indeed add it to the Up Next queue. Then, without hitting the Play triangle I went to another album and "Add to Up Next". Miracle! Added to the bottom of the list! Then, from the Up Next list I started the play by hitting the first song on my Up Next list. Then while music was playing I added a third album the same way, and YES bottom of the list! Great!

I'm not sure what the correct ingredient is, either starting with a fresh queue, adding while not playing, or avoiding the Play triangle and initiating play directly from the Up Next queue list. But you've given me the start of success. A thousand thanks! I'll get this figured out.

By the way, yes, Apple Music is not perfect but I'm enjoying it immensely. The regular Music app was always my most used app on my phone, for years. And I was using Beats since before Apple bought them. Totally loved it, too. The combination is a match made in heaven as far as I'm concerned. And being able to ask Siri to play from the streaming library is awesome. And I think once I get the Up Next feature mastered it might become my favorite thing, like cherry on the top!

Unfortunately this workaround didn't work for me. I'm on 8.4.1, and no matter what I do "Add to up next" does the same as "Play Next". I hope Apple fix this bug soon as it was the only new software feature that I was interested when I bought the new iPod 5, and it doesn't work!

Sadly I just updated to iOS9 and the same thing. It's the first thing I checked as soon as I upgraded. Small things make the difference. But still broken.

Cancelled Apple Music auto renew. Joined 30 day trial of Rdio. I can queue albums one after another without interrupting the one playing. Finally an "Add to Up Next"-type feature that works right! And if I forget to queue up another album before the last one ends auto play will kick in and give me more music like I've been playing. Let's see how other features stack up to Apple Music over the next 30 days.

I've been using Rdio because it had a fantastic and simple way to add albums to the end of my play list. I was able to listen to hours worth of albums all strung together one after the other. Rdio died so now I'm back to the drawing board. Tried Apple Music again, not as a subscriber this time, just with old albums in my library. Even after these months and updates the Apple Music queue is still messed up. Some days I can queue albums continuously just like I could with Rdio, using "Add to Up Next" to add the next album to the bottom of the list. And other days no matter what I do "Add to Up Next" adds new albums to the top of my list just like "Play Next". It's incredibly frustrating. If anyone has read the preceding posts you'll notice conflicting reports that it works right and it doesn't. That still has not changed. I cannot get Apple Music to consistently add to the bottom of my queue. It must have something to do with how the list gets started, some mode or something, because once it starts working I can keep adding to the bottom of the list as I wish. But once I slip up and let the music come to an end and try to restart album queueing it doesn't work...or it does. Random as far as I can tell. I wish there was a definitive users guide. I have spent time with Apple Support and they describe the party line like it's supposed to work that way, or don't respond to me at all. But I'll swear there's a bug.

I've been playing around with this Play Next and Add to Up Next thing, and it is definitely confusing/frustrating. It only works the way you expect it to work if you do things a certain way.

Start with a fresh launch of Apple Music (swipe it closed and reopen it)

Choose a song, but don't tap it to play it. Instead tap the three dots and choose Play Next or Add to Up Next, doesn't matter. (This puts the song in to the newly created queue). You'll also then have to hit the play button on the bottom nav controls to actually get the song to start playing.
(If you start a song by tapping on it directly, it's going to automatically add the songs after it and then treat it the same as clicking the triangle play button).

Now, anything you add via the three dots to play next will be added to the beginning of your queue, and anything you add to Up Next will be added at the end.

If you click a Triangle play button or directly on a track, it'll only give the option to play it next, by asking if you'd like to keep what's in Up Next or to clear it out.

This simply won't work right unless you start it the way I described at the beginning.

I wish this worked more intuitively and hopefully they will adjust how this works, though I don't hear much complaining about it, so I'm not sure it'll be "fixed" or adjusted.

If I remember correctly, Google Music deals with this kinda stuff a little better (though it's still not perfect).

Seems like a pretty basic functionality to be overlooked like it is.

Thanks, skiltrip. I tried your process. It's strange but it worked for me a couple times in a row. I found a little twist. Instead of starting the process with a song (as you suggest) if you start with an album (any of three methods: triangle, first song, or three dots) and then listen to it (or skip songs) until the final song and then pick a new album to "Add to Up Next" it will add to the bottom (of course, since there aren't any more songs in the queue). But importantly the queue now seems to work properly from that time forward, because I can freely "Add to Up Next" albums that go to the bottom of the list. In that way you can start out with an album (rather than a "dummy" song) and keep the albums rolling if you queue up the second, third, fourth album during the last song or any time later. That's queue bliss! I spent about 15 minutes getting this straight for myself after your advice. I also read that it might matter what Mode your "My Music" tab is in (Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc from the drop down in the middle of the page) like if you're in Album mode may queuing albums works but not in Song mode, for instance. So during my first 15 minutes I was always in Album mode, finding the process working consistently. Then I spent a few minutes trying that process in Artist and Song modes, and it seemed to still work well, though I admit I was not as thorough. I also played around with whether it mattered picking an album from the album list or from "Recently Added", and the process seemed to still work regardless of where the first album was chosen, though, again, I was not super thorough here. To summarize, I think your method works fairly robustly whether from a starting song or album, as long as you're careful to queue the second album during the sole song or final song in the case of album. It's crazy that the queue does not work right until you've actually started a queue, and that you can't start a queue without committing to listen to something you might not want to (a "dummy" song) or not be able to relax (having to catch the last song of the first album). Haha. But this is almost good enough for me. Like you said, it seems there are not a lot of complaints or comments on this thread, so maybe it's not a big priority for Apple to fix. Thanks for your help! Let me know if you try out my twist if it works or not for you.

'Play Next' works as a stack - Last In First Out, while 'Add to Up Next' works as a queue - First In First Out.

This seems good description of how it works, but the boil says its confusing ONLY because its the same queue.. Who really cares which one gets in and/or out first based on option selected, the queue itself clearly says "up next"

That's the part that always confuses me.

I also wish Apple had done this differently too.... You select a bunch of tracks to play (your queue is empty)

Right click the song(s), and choose 'Add to Up Next'... At first i thought "ok i only have these songs selected, so when it finishes the selected songs, it will stop"

no, it didn't it continued playing the rest of my play list which i never selected initially.

To this day, this will always confuse me. I know how the options are working by nature, but the distinction is its stll the "up next" queue... There is no 'other queue' it adds to physically...

Still not fixed. When adding a album regardless of up next or play next, then adding a second album using up next or play next will break the flow of the first album.
