I was amazed at the difference adding 1 gig of memory made to my performance. I was expecting a difference as adding 1 gig is doubling the memory, but it was more significant than I expected.

Previously there was a lag when using IMovie, now it flows. I highly recommend adding additional memory if you have only the default 1gig.

Just wait until you get to 4GB. Beachballs will be a thing of the past. But yeah, RAM (in my opinion) is the single best way to improve a computers performance on the cheap.

3 gigs is great but you might as well go for broke. If you don't have 2x2gb dimms, they're not matched (and I'm the first to say that the performance difference is negligible, but if you're going to spend $150 on RAM, why not just spend the extra $50 and get 4gb)

It's like 123.00 more for less than 3 to 5% increase. Plus I can add a 2 meg later.

I ordered an extra 2 Gig stick to add to the stock 1 Gig stick. It won't matter that it's not matched, will it? It'll still be a lot better than what I have now and only a little worse than a full blown 4 Gig matched setup, right?

memory upgrade benchmark results graphed

I graphed the memory upgrade benchmarks that Vapor indicates in his post. Here are the results:

It certainly seems to make more sense to jump from 1 GB to 3GB -- the benefit of going from 3 to 4 GB isn't as pronounced.

And it seems that the benefit of having the 3 GB outweighs the performance of having only 2GB even if it's matched.

Great graph! It looks like I made the right choice then. Thanks!

I just ordered an extra 1GB crucial stick... Only cost me $40 free shipping... (no rebates either)

I was not going to pay $140 for a 2GB crucial stick...

I will upgrade to 4GB when RAM prices come down...

Then I will give my (2) 1GB sticks to my sister so she can use them in her iMac.

There was a similar thread on the Mac forum over on dpreview.com and I posted the same link over there. No one seemed to appreciate it over in that neck of the Internet woods.

To me, seeing the information visually made all the difference in the world. I was thinking of getting 2Gb total, but now I'm convinced 3Gb is the way to go.

Where did you buy your memory?

Only thing I wonder about is those tests did it in extreme memory using situations. If you're just using undemanding applications, would the dual channel of 2 GB be better than 3 GB?

That graph doesn't make sense to me, how do you get 4GB of memory in a 1.83 Mini?

I bought Transcend brand memory from Newegg.com. I've had excellent luck with this brand in my cameras. My 1gig stick is working well in my new IMac!

I also had a previous posting regarding the door that you open to add memory. The screw would not turn and I didn't want to strip it, so I brought it into the Apple store. They couldn't remove the screw either, so they replaced my entire unit with a brand new one. Now that's great customer service!

If you notice the link I gave was for the macbook pro. I am sorry if anyone was misled. It was my assumtion the test would be similar for the Imac, both being built on the same mobile platform. They do say they will have an Imac test up soon. I will buy 2 meg from mac sales then another 2 later.....maybe. If the test come back like the macbook pro I will stick with 3megs total. Again I am sorry if anyone was unintentionaly misled.

Scratch that.. sounds like it comes with a single 1gb... <Does the 1gb 24" come with one 1gb stick or 2 512mb sticks?>

I take it there are two slots total right?

TIA....
