I know that this subject may of have been posted before, but I will be switching over to at&t with a 1st gen iphone I just got off of craigslist.
I heard it is possible to activate the phone with At&t, then you can take off the data plan later. Is this true. I just talked with my local at&t rep, and they said the iphone would not work if the data plan is removed. Is this right?

Is there a way to activate the iphone w/o a data plan?

Well before you could. They may be changing their plans and stuff though. I really wouldn't try to use the iPhone without a data plan. It likes to switch from wireless to edge randomly (you can disable this if you install third party apps/jailbreak the phone).
