I have a Mac Pro manufactured on August 07, 2006.

It currently has an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, and I would like to add a 2nd video card to support a third 20 inch Cinema Display.

I was thinking about getting the ATI 5770, using that as my primary display (23 inch Cinema Display, and then putting the 7300 in the 2nd PCIe slot to power the other 2 20 inch Cinema Displays.

Can anyone tell me if this config will work? Will the 7300 be operating at 4x or 8x rather than 16? It is my understanding that there is only one 16x slot.

I may use the third Cinema Display as a viewer for NetFlix or Hulu videos.

thanks for any suggestions.

It should work fine. Not sure about the bus speed but 7300 GT will be more than fine with 8x, even 4x should be sufficient.

The top 8x slot is fine, I had mine set up like that for a while when I got my 5770, but ultimately I tossed the 7300 on eBay, and got enough for it to cover the adapters for my monitors since the Apple 5770 is happy to run 3 monitors. Part of the reason I did this was there were starting to be apps that the 7300 wasn't supported by, and I like to be able to bounce around on my displays. The 5770 hasn't seemed to notice the additional load.
