Hi -

I hope this makes sense. My wife and I currently have 2 iPhone 3G's on a family plan that we started in July 2008 when the iPhone 3G first was launched - which makes us 15 months into our 24 month contract.

We are adding on a new line for my father-in-law and was wondering if I could pull a bit of a switcharoo of sorts. Would I be able to purchase the subsidized iPhone 3GS for the new line - downgrade my iPhone's plan to a regular plan swap the sim out of my current iPhone 3G with the new 3GS and just give my father-in-law an old AT&T phone? Note my father in law is 80 and he is just going to have a cell phone for an emergency since he likes to wander around :D.

Thanks,

Yeah, it should work, but you can only cancel his iPhone data plan after he gets an AT&T regular phone for a while, since AT&T does not allow the cancellation of data plans anymore. They are getting stricter!

I did exactly that in a MUCH simpler way then you are suggesting.

I walked into an Apple store in the local mall and added an additional (family) line with an iPhone - but I really wanted that iPhone on my existing line.

I walked out of the Apple store with the iPhone and new line and walked about 50 feet to the AT&T store in the same mall.

I told the guy in the AT&T store to please move the iPhone & data to my primary line on the account and to please put my (inactive) Krazr on the new line.

Took all of 5 minutes and they had absolutely no problem with it. Nothing was canceled, nothing was downgraded but was just moved. If you get the iPhone directly from the AT&T store just tell them exactly want you want to do. They don't care which line it is on (or you could just sell it for that matter) as long as you keep the NEW LINE with them for 2 years.
