Adding a second email account

My wife and I both have gmail accounts. I've set the Mail app up for mine and that's ok. I then add her account but her emails are ending up interspersed with mine within the same window. We'd like them to appear in separate windows, possibly with the option to call up the individual windows on demand rather than both at once (not that we have anything to hide from each other you understand!). Previously on the PC we could only have one account open at a time through Google so we could sign in to our account after the other was closed down. Is that possible with Mail?

If you've set up two accounts, then you should have two inboxes.
Clicking on "Inbox", you will see both inboxes.
opening the tree you should see the two accounts. Click on each on separately and you should see the individuals inboxes. (see screenshot)

I recently bought a new iMac and we're three people using it. Hence three user accounts.

The problem you are writing about is solved above, but how do you handle Apple Accounts? Face Time? iMessage?

We're an "Apple" family with Macs, iPhones and my daughter has an iPad. I don't want her messages or calls when I'm using the iMac.

I also want my account to work and look the way I want it, not the way my daughter wants it.

Some files we want to share, and those we save in the shared folder or externally.

I can see your reasoning for an Apple family. This is our first Apple product and we are the only two using it. But it's a perfectly reasonable solution as long as it's straightforward to change users.

It is straightforward indeed, and you can both be logged in at the same time. Click the account name in the top right corner of the screen and switch user.

If you are new to Mac OS, you can add a user account in System Settings, Users.

Sounds like the way to go then. Yes I'm new to Mac OS so lots to learn.

Another benefit to having separate users is you cannot see her files and she cannot see your files. The downside is the same, the files for the other party are locked and inaccessible. Really depends on what level of isolation is desired between you and your wife.

On my system I have 7 email addresses in Apple Mail and have no problem. The Inbox is the sum of all of the account inboxes so it does need to be expanded if there are multiple email accounts configured and active.
