Adding Cloud to the iMac

Hello,
I just got the new iPad and it has Cloud and I want to use it on my iMac also. From what I can tell I need a newer version of the operating system than I have. My iMac is using version 10.5.8. How out of date is that? It looks for updates regularly. Do I need to buy something to update it so I can use Cloud?

Very - you are at least 2 major versions behind on the OS side just to get you current today. And that doesn’t include Mountain Lion due next month. You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (I don’t know where you are going to get a disc) and upgrade from there on the Mac App Store to Lion. That is the bare minimum to get iCloud support on your iMac.

Very - you are at least 2 major versions behind on the OS side just to get you current today. And that doesn’t include Mountain Lion due next month. You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first (I don’t know where you are going to get a disc) and upgrade from there on the Mac App Store to Lion. That is the bare minimum to get iCloud support on your iMac.

If you had MobileMe, I *think* that Apple was offering a free upgrade disc for Snow Leopard to encourage people to update to lion (making the upgrade just 30 bucks instead of an effective 60 bucks given SL costs). Apple stopped selling Snow Leopard after Lion was released so getting that will be tough.

Not to mention that your Mac has to meet certain requirements:

Lion Requirements

Lion is obviously going to be harder on your system and may not be possible if your Mac is not a Core2Duo at the minimum.

You should defiantly invest in some RAM for your system too. If you got your laptop with Leopard, it probably doesn’t have enough for Lion right away.

I'd install it, then wait until next month to upgrade to Mountain Lion directly for $20. Alternatively, buy Lion now for $30, then Mountain Lion for $20.
