Adding ebooks (.epub) to the Books app through iTunes ...

So, it's been a while since I've done this, but I used to be able to manually select and add books, that were in the iBooks app (or whatever it was called), through iTunes. It seems like this is not the case anymore? Is this correct?

I'm using iTunes 12.9.2.5 and my iPad is up-to-date as well.

Is it, now, only possible to add books to your iDevice's Books app through iCloud? If so, how do I select which books end up in iCloud and which don't? And the only way to put them permanently in the iOS Books app is to download each of them individually from the iCloud, right?

This seems so impractical (to me) that I just experienced my first case of 'I'm about to throw this sh*t out of the window' with an Apple device. Never thought Apple would ever get there. Getting some serious Windows PTSD flashbacks here.

I am aware of apps like Marvin that still allow me to select and manually add books through iTunes, but my question is specifically about the Books app on iOS.

I’m occasionally feeding the books app with ePub files, but from the Documents by Readdle app. I use Documents to access files on my Mac and download them to my iPad. From there I can copy a book to the Books app via the share button.
Of course I could just read in Documents but I prefer the Books app personally.

I suppose you are using Mojave. I had the same problem with very many epubs that i DIDN’T buy from Apple. I always transfer my books and music manually, have never ever synced anuthing. So I solved the problem by deleting the Books app from my Mac and reinstalling iTunes version 12.6.5.3. This version allows manual transfers as well as editing of tags.
But you can also have both iTunes 12.9.2.5 and 12.9.2.5 on your mac simultaneously, just use another bookreader on the Mac. I never read on the Mac but there is this great app caled Clearview you can use.
