I currently am a secondary line on an AT&T familiy plan. If I switch to using an iPhone, I understand that I will have to pay the additional $20 for the data plan, but I am unsure about the other fees. I currently have to pay $9.99 a month for my line (a secondary line on my current family plan), but will I now have to pay $29.99 for the line, because it is an iPhone? Or does the $29.99 fee only apply to family plans with more than one iPhone(or just the iPhone family plans listed)?

Does anyone have any experience with this plan upgrade/know how much it is going to cost me per month? Thanks!

I was in the same boat as you. My line is a secondary line that costs 9.99 a month. To get the iPhone on your existing plan all you have to do it pay $20 more a month. So for me my total bill is going to be 29.99 for my line.

Has anyone actually done this or is it just what we think should be possible??? I'm in the same boat and don't want to fork out $600 unless i'm POSITIVE that it will work this way.

My father in law has AT&T. He lives across the country. I wonder if I can tap onto his service. I know he has a family plan for his girlfriend and brother over there. Hmmmm.......

I have actually done this and I am using my iPhone right now as I'm typing this. During the activation process all I had to do was the choose the $20 data plan and I was set. So far I haven't had any problems at all with my service.

Yeah the $29.95 price quoted includes the data plan and the extra line fee.

I have done this, i'm secondary on the familyplan and i activated my iphone in mins and i added the $20 data plan. We're going to activate for the primary very soon as well. It works without a hitch.

If this is all true, then how come the AT&T lady I talked to recently said that instead of costing approx 110$ for myself (primary line), my dad, and my brother all on a family plan, that if I were to get an iPhone, it would cost us 120$ even though I already have a 20$ Media Max Unlimited plan with my current phone. If it is strictly 20$ added, then how come if I get an iPhone, it doesnt come out to the same exact price I have now?

The iPhone plan is unique (other data plans won't "work"), and it supercedes your previous data plan, so that might explain the price difference.

I am also on a Family Plan, and we were advised to pay $29.95 a month for unlimited text (we were paying $14.95/month just for me!) which covers all phones on the plan (5). That way I only needed the $20 iPhone plan, and all 5 of us now have unlimited text!

I have a family plan and all you have to so is sync the phone with itunes, give your existing account info and pick your plan. It will cost an additional 20$. Mine was $30 extra a month because I wanted 1500 text messages per month.

Man ATT makes me nervous; to join them I mean.

I called the rep to see how I would go about creating a family plan with my mother who wants a regular phone and me with an iPhone. The rep said that this was impossible and only family plans can be created with other iPhones, and that we would have to do individual plans.

I am talking to another rep and they are saying this is incorrect. I am so confused. They said it would be easiest if I started a plan and then added my mother to it or vise versa.

Man kinda feels like a joke that it costs an extra 9.99 to have the iPhone join the family plan when only one person is on it and their is an extra line just sitting there open and free.... But they said its not possible...

Sorry for the Double Post

Did you not have to pay an extra 9.99 for the second line? ATT reps keep telling me I have to even though it'd just be my mom and I on the plan. Ahh so confused...

The rep is incorrect.

The best way to go about this is the following:
1) Create a Family Plan with 2 lines. Get a "free" phone for your line.
2) Buy and iPhone and add it to your line.
3) Sell your "free" phone.

I managed to aquire an iphone 2g from a friend who just upgraded to the 3g, and I am going to be activating it tonight, as long as what you guys say is true. The ATT website makes it sound like its gonna cost a minimum of $60 and the iphone is its own seperate plan... I am latched on to my inlaws family plan, and we already have unlimited text, so it looks like my total bill with unlimited data is gonna be $29.99/month... :D
