Adding Ram and the Mac Pro

For what I know about the Mac Pro line of computers, it has always been said to add ram in matching pairs. The new 2013 Mac Pro comes with (3)4Gb of ram. Ordering from apple.com, I can upgrade to 16GB of ram for about $100 USD.

Other World Computing offers a 4GB ram module for like $65.

My question is, will there be any system issues if I add the OWC 4GB ram to the apple 12GB configuration? I am speaking of the baseline configuration.

i added stock ram a cheaper solution 1066mhz ddr3 added 32 gb in my mac pro 4.1
the only thing that has to be done is to get rid of the ram install notice on boot up, this is done by logging in as the root user and and reboot , i have no issues

BTO? or after market on your own? $100 from Apple sounds like 4x4GB instead of 3x4GB configuration. And yes you could just add your own 4th.

FBDIMMs (2006-2008) used sets of two, but 2009-2012 used DR3 memory and controller and while it is "triple channel" can accept various combinations, 1, 2, 3 or 4 DIMMs. There are rules for the types of DIMMs (buffered, registered, ranking) that also have to be taken into account sometimes.

Someone posted something Friday or Saturday that only the 6,1 can use a single DIMM but I thought that was true going back to 4,1 and 5,1 also.

I have a nMP base model as well, and filled the missing slot with an Ebay OEM module. Total cost was $30 and what I received was exactly the same as what Apple sells for $100. There are tons of the 4gb modules on Ebay, because many users upgrade to 32/64 setups, and need to offload the smaller modules.

Just my .02 since I just did what you're talking about.
