Adding RAM to my macbook

hey everyone.

well i recently read in an issue of mac|life about the benefits of adding RAM to your system. I looked on ifixit.com for the do-it-yourself instructions and it seems pretty simple. I see that the macbook has 2 slots for RAM, do i need to keep the factory installed RAM in there (it is 512mb) or can it be replaced without losing any information or anything? Also I've been able to find RAM for my system starting at about $99 for 1 GB. anyone know of a place where i can get it cheaper?

It's volatile memory. It loses data every time you turn off your Mac.

No information will be lost and yes its safe to pull out.

Yeah $99 is too much for 1gb of memory. I just listed my old macbook memory on ebay for $35.

And since you're upgrading, I'd suggest going straight to 2 GB. You won't regret it.

You'll be best served upgrading to 2GB RAM (2x 1GB SODIMM)

Try to get a matched pair; it'l be faster.

I bought the next to cheapest RAM I found on www.ramseeker.com

I'd buy This RAM as I've used this vendor before with good results.

Let me tell you, I just replaced mine and you have to push it in really hard.

You will not loose any data. Its perfectly safe. If you need assistance look up on youtube, there are some videos guides on how to change the RAM

Dont pay over 70$ for 1Gig Stick.

As your macbook came with 512MB, it would have one 256MB stick in each slot making a total of 512. If you are going to use your macbook for just basic mailing and internet surfing i suggest you buy a single 1Gig stick and put it in one of the slots. Keep the RAM in the other slot as it is. It will give you a total of 1.25 GB RAM. That would be sufficient. If you have more use for it like movie encoding etc, I suggest you get two 1GB sticks and replace the RAM in both the slots making a total of 2GB.

Also keeping the old ram is a good idea as if you have to take it in for any repairs during the warranty period, you can just replace the ram you installed with the original one and the macstore guys wont be able to blame it on your RAM
