I've got a new Nehalem 3.2ghz quad-core Mac Pro to replace my old PC that failed.

I've fortunately moved everything I needed from the PC - and I'm now ripping it apart for usable parts - and one of those parts is the DVD-RW drive, a Pioneer DVR-213LS - which worked perfectly in the PC it was previously in.

I'd like to add it as a second optical drive in the Mac Pro. It seems that the small face-plate on the disc-tray needs to be removed from the tray in order for it to fit the moving door on the front of the computer.

It works, sometimes - but other times it is slow to eject, won't eject at all, or if it does, it will eject violently fast under Mac OS X 10.5.6 - and then won't close. Has anyone else had similar problems?

I know it is recommended to set them to CSEL mode - but this one has nothing like that on it. It's just the drive with the SATA/power connectors at the back.

I tried the same thing with the installation of a secondary optical drive after removing the faceplate as recommended but unfortunately had the same issues as yourself with ejecting sometimes being too slow and other times getting stuck or not fully ejecting.

Couldn't find the resolution for it so I finally decided to remove the secondary optical drive and in place put a hard drive that now runs Windows 7 in boot camp.

Never really found out why it did that.

Having a very similar issue. I have a brand new Mac Pro. I added a second optical drive. At first everything was perfect. I could see discs in the drive, evreything worked great. Later that same day, all of a sudden, the drive (and disk) disappeared! A day later, and a couple reboots, it came back. Then went bye-bye again.

Anyone have any ideas, why the drive seems to come and go?
