Looking at getting one of these, but I have AKG 712 headphones which have an impedance of 62 ohm, which I understand isn't enough to trigger the headphone amp to switch to high voltage (above 150 ohm it automatically switches from 1.25v to 3v). The problem is these headphones are notoriously hard to drive, so I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a way to switch the voltage higher in software?

This has been wondered about several times, but no one has figured out a way to do it. Would be a very nice feature. Most planars could also use it.

Thanks for the reply, yeah I figured it must have been discussed but couldn't find anything relevant, do you have links to any other threads?

I don't have a link handy, but you may be able to find something via Google. I had some success finding discussion that way, mostly on reddit, last week when I was researching it for a customer review. (What I found indicated that the power for most planars with impedance about like yours wasn't enough, but I didn't see anything about the AKGs.)

Ahh yeah, sounds like we've got the same problem then! Surely someone must be able to make a software switcher soon huh

The power switching may not be operated by software, could be an electronic control of some other kind. There's some Apple engineer somewhere who knows ...

The support page that explains the switching is:

If you Google the document number, HT212856, you'll run across a lot of pages and forum posts that allude to it.
Cheers, did a google of that number but couldn't find anything related to manually switching it?
