Adjusting Volume With Screen Off?

Quick question, We used to be able to adjust the volume on our phones with the side buttons without turning the screen on. As an example, my wife uses a White Noise app, and she could always turn the volume up or down without activating the screen by using the side buttons, but since iOS 15 she cant do that.

I did ensure the option under SOUNDS has the option for side buttons activated but still nothing.

Anyone know how to reactivate that?

Mine still work, provided a sound is playing in the background. Perhaps try a hard restart of the phone?

Perhaps a dumb question, is there a case on the phone? If yes, try without it. I’ve seen some cases where the button response is horrible. I

Not a dumb question at all, she does have a case but it seems to be fine when her screen is activated. It adjusts the volume just fine.
