I used to use a piece of software to limit access to computers for company interns so they couldn't install downloads etc, does anyone know what that software was called or can recommend something that does that.

Thanks
Rich

i know of one...

it's called Mac OS X 10.3 :D

make a new account, and then select the "limitations" tab. you can use the "simple finder" option and select the software that they are allowed to use.

panther (latest updates)

in simple finder, i cannot click start apps on second tab of the applications folder. it works sometimes tho

mass adding apps to the simple user acct (locate) changes it to the standard user setting when saving config

bogus

Thanks - how about real help : )

Yeah I knew that was coming !

Believe me if I could get new computers that would be the solution.
I have OS 9 running on some Beige G3 350 Mhz so OS X is out of the question, that and I don't have licenses for all the Apps to go that route. We let the interns use the older computers yet they still screw them up.

In the meantime I used to play with a demo that was like an Admin tool that could lock out downloads, certain folders, install apps without an admin p/w.

I can't for the life of me remember the application name and the computer I used it on is dead.

Outside of OS X does anyone know of an application that works like the admin function.

Thanks
Rich

Simple Finder is NOT secure

pfft! Simple Finder is terribly vulnerable. Here's a few...
- SF can run *any* app if there is a document to launch it - eg double click a .doc file and Word (or whatever app is defaulted to launch) will run
- If you have Classic apps in you allowed apps, the Apple Menu includes the "Recent Servers" which lets you browse the whole disk
- SF allows access to System Preferences thru backdoors - eg Command-click the Dock Divider and select Dock preferences.
- SF allows you to navigate the whole disk using command-up-arrow from any of the three Finder windows the user is *supposedly* limited to.

I expected that SF would not allow any of these to happen. I expected it to be secure.

The "Some Limits" doesn't allow access to "System Preferences" at all if it's not checked.

In fact, "Some limits" won't let you launch any app you haven't been given access to.

so the lesser security gives greater security in some things!

So use Some Limits not Simple Finder if you want security for your system from users.

I also use Mac Minder for added security and time controls, but it's only available for OSX.
