I got the email, but I have to admit I'm a little bit weary..
Something is telling me it's not a good idea.
Well if your app is so good, why would you need to advertise that? Good work often goes unnoticed because it's not advertised well. Sometimes word of mouth is all you need, but not always. It's not uncommon for a lower quality service or product to do better just because it was promoted better. All the offer shows is that they're trying to grow their business... If they're letting me try it out for free that seems pretty reasonable.Of course, this is just my opinion, but I figure if they are that good, why do the need to scour the itunes app store and email us (without us having signed up to anything at all)? Wouldn't they attract customers automatically (or even be too busy to deal will small-fries like us when they have coca cola signed up)?
Wanted to respond when I saw your questions- my name is Mike & I'm the PM for AdMob for iPhone and I apologize for any confusion.
We are making developers the offer of $250 in advertising credit (to clarify - not cash) because we know that many developers don't have experience advertising and we want to encourage you to try it and see results (increased downloads, improved ranking) for yourself. When you receive the email with the $250 offer in advertising credits, you should contact our sales director: fassil@admob.com to redeem the credits. Credits won't automatically appear in your account when you register on our site.
We've had several top apps advertise with us since our launch in July including: vSNAX Videos, Stitcher, Loopt, Moblyng, SnapMyLife, Zkout, Whrrl, and HappyAppys' Expando, ClockBlock, and Word Whirl.

I got the credit added to my account. Took 23 minutes for the $250 to disappear :O No real impact on sales unfortunately but that could just be my app!
Mike, I sent an email about my missing credits four days ago, and have yet to receive a response back from fassil@admob.com. I would like to try you guys out, but you're not making this at all easy.
That seems rather extreme. Did you bid really high or something?
43672 impressions, 942 click throughs in that time. I bid 22cents per click which is only 2cents above the minimum.
To be honest, it sounds a bit suspicious to me....
