hi

i am about to purchase an educational cs2 suite for my macbook pro, and was wondering can i make money from the products i make from it?

it's not illegal or anything because it is eductaional?

The education price is so that you can afford the software in order to learn it, not because you are in school. If you plan to make money using the software, then you should spend the money to get the commercial version so that the developer is properly compensated.
 
Some people do it anyway, but it is against the license agreement and poor form to make money with educational software licenses.
 
ok thanks for the help, so i am legally alowed to make projects and sell them by using CS2 educational...awesome :D
 
But you must be a post-secondary student or teacher to be eligable to license it.

Macromedia used to have in their educational license that if you ever used it commercially, you owed them the difference in price between the versions. That I believe was scrapped when Adobe bought Macromedia.
 
actually hang on a sec...

on the website, there is the following:
"As set forth in the EULA, Education versions cannot be used for any commercial purpose. A commercial purpose is any revenue-generating activity beyond an educational institution's usual and customary educational activities."

but in the actual EULA it does not state anything like that.

so i guess its your call. i have used (legally purchased) educational versions for commercial use for 8 years and never had a problem.

Or a registered charity... ;)

Of course, the drawback is that you have to repurchase the edu license all over again if and when you upgrade... no upgrade discounts like you get with full licenses.

You can upgrade from the educational version to a retail version using the retail upgrade scheme. However, in my case I had to call Adobe support because the upgrade wouldn't accept the EDU serial.

Although, it's much cheaper to just keep buying the EDU versions.

So that really works? I'm going to need to upgrade to CS3 later this year and I'll no longer be a student. It would be difficult to afford the full price for the suit.

To the OP: if you can, wait just a few more weeks! CS3 ships on the 27th!!

Answer
Good news! You can use Adobe Education software (any title!) to produce commercial/professional paid-for work when you leave school, or even while you are in school. In this regard, Adobe does not limit how student software is used. So students can use it to learn and to make money!

(Of course, students must agree to the terms of the End User Licensing Agreement — which appears during installation — just as every software customer must do.)

Education version

“Is the Education version a scaled-down version? How is it different than the more expensive retail version I see being sold at other computer stores?”

Answer
The Education and retail versions are virtually identical — we do not modify the software itself. To differentiate the product offering between education and retail, we may remove some clip art, some fonts, or other non-application resources. So really, the only difference is price. Student customers can be assured that this as an opportunity to get the “full version” without paying the “full price”.

After graduation
Student question
“What happens after I graduate? If a new version comes out that I want to buy, do I have to buy the full new retail version or can I save money and just buy the retail upgrade?”

Answer
You are able to continue to use your Education version serial number when you leave school to upgrade to future commercially priced versions if you want to, rather than having to buy the next “full” version. So you save money now while you are a student, and also after you graduate!

1. My friend who works for a charity, wants to get CS3 to teach, do these edu and charity version work like the full versions?

2. Also they seem to be available online stores to order from. I have seen Online stores there is no mention of any proof required for charity numbers etc when you order, so i assume they would work when putting the serial in. Whats stopping you guys from getting them cheap, apart from being honest of course. Or am i missing something?

You can buy it, but must supply the shop or adobe the relevent info for the charity, or education depending on which version brought, then you will be able to activate it.

If you read above, it says that the edu version is basically the full version minus a few fonts and stock images
