I am using Safari 8.0.3 on OS X 10.10.2. I occasionally get popup message that it is out of date, but when I download the update it comes from a website other than adobe (nows2check.newupdateweb.com). The file that gets downloaded is adobe_flashplayer_e2c7b_Setup.dmg. The file that gets downloaded from the adobe flash site is AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller_16_ltrosxd_aaa_aih.dmg.

the nows2check website seems to be blocking searches about it with a 'robots.txt' file? Anyone know anything about this? What's up with this?

Suspect adware or malware. Genuine updates come from Adobe. Suspect your are visiting a suspect site that is triggering the popup.

Yes.

Do not mount that .dmg and if you do, don't run any installer it may contain.

Best yet, remove Flash from your system and keep a copy of Google Chrome around for those occasions when you need Flash. It integrates Flash and does a good job of auto-updating.

This is correct. Get your Flash updates from adobe.com

In the meantime go to adwaremedic.com and download Adware Medic. Run it and get rid of the crap.

Thanks, guys, was pretty sure it was bogus when I saw the .dmg file installer did not come from Adobe. Never did the install, once I saw the website it came from. Have seen it a few times, so it must be on one of the sites I frequent, and will try to pay attention to the sites I visit to try to determine which one it is.

what adobe should have done is to issue their MD5 string on each of their updates.

I'm getting the update notices from the Adobe web site. HOWEVER, "most" of the time, Adobe Flash just downloads the update and runs and installs all on its own except for asking me if I want to update. When I hit yes, it might inform me to close my browser or whatever, but that's it. But about 1 out of 4-5 times, it will ask if I want to update, but instead take me to their damn "get3.adobe.com/flash...." web site where I see an "update" button. Half the time there it will then lock up Firefox (it actually loads VERY VERY SLOWLY to the point of tedium) and if I force quit and then restart Firefox, it goes back to the same page and loads just fine, BUT I have to download their installer thing and basically install from scratch. WTF is the point of an "update" that you have to install from scratch? Why does their auto-update system FAIL so damn often that it takes you to that page instead of just updating? I don't get it. I can't find this mentioned anywhere the last time I looked so I thought I'd mention it in a thread here (doesn't seem to be the same site the OP got sent to in Safari, but it does beg the question why it's behaving differently (and this isn't just once in a blue moon, but about every 4th update or so).

A friend of mine has even worse luck and tells it to update, and it will just say, "Update FAILED" and the ONLY way to fix it is to download it as a new install and start over. And then inevitably it will do the same thing again sooner or later. The only real difference is she is using a Macbook Pro (2012 model) and has multiple users on her system and I have a 2012 Mini with one user (both running Mavericks). Yes, Adobe Flash SUCKS, but so damn many sites use it, it's hard to ignore completely.

Consider using the Chrome browser for those cases where Flash is required. I am finding that the times I need flash I use Chrome otherwise I use Safari. Keeps from requiring to install Flash player.

The difference is that Chrome handles the Flash and does not require I install Flash. When Chrome is not running Flash is not running.
