Made the jump - no CS 5,6,7, etc or monthly rent. Plus what I do use is **** hot - honestly has put the zip back into my photography.

Now using "Fast Raw Reader" and "Affinity"

Fast, easy to use and £50 the lot.

Finally have backup that cares and product that makes sense on my MacPro AND 11"MBA,:D:D

Very Happy Bunny.

Sharkey

I went Adobe free earlier this year and don't miss it. I'm one of I think two people who uses Photos on this forum but the flow is Photo Mechanic for ingest, culling and metadata. I run those into Photos and can search easily by the metadata created in PM and then use the very excellent extensions available from MacPhun, Affinity, DxO and Pixelmator to do any work that Photos doesn't do. The new Affinity beta has an "edit in Affinity Photo" extension that has a lot of promise (still rough around the edges). I don't have a huge need to round trip in the classic sense.

Affinity is awesome with both Affinity Photo & Designer. They've publicly stated several times as well that they're doing a DAM, though no real timeline.

Rawtherapee (free) is similar to fast raw reader
Darktable : (free) very similar to lightroom
DXO Optics : Paid edition but very good also.

Does it do round trips to Nik, OnOne, Macphun...etc.?

Slayerizer :- Looked at all of these in relative detail over the past few months and for my own needs have not found them necessary. In general I found each of these just too different after years of Adobe addiction and just a few too many glitches - Just as I found them:)

MCAsan:- I did have the Nik package but never used it? and have no experience of the other two you mention. I will say, however, that using the Apple filing system with "Fast Raw Reader" is a light year ahead of Bridge and that after years of looking for a DAM I could go with I know that they just do not suite me (singular).

Sorry if I mixed you together there.

Simply put. Affinity edits in a way I like (fast & accurate) and FRR is just very very fast. If I was forced to be critical; which I am;). FRR seems a bit sensitive to file types from my past cameras (Orf), but I will look into that and Affinity does have a steep learning curve but not as steep as I found Capture1 for example which to me was just a different language altogether:).

Sorry I cannot answer your questions directly but for me, so far, they "just work".:D

As one of the OnOne Plus program....not so impressed. Too many missing parts and concepts on the desktop and no where near as advanced as Adobe in doing editing across MacOS and IOS. I guess we will know by the end of September.

What do you use for asset management (DAM)? Importing, archiving and labeling? That's something that is still missing from Affinity Photo. Though I read somewhere that they have plans for it.

oblomow,

Yes, the developers of Affinity Photo (and Affinity Designer) also have plans to release a DAM but I would guess that it won't be until next year at the earliest (and possibly sometime in 2018).

For those that don't know, right now Affinity has two programs and they are planning on releasing a layout app sometime next year (possibly but doubtful that the beta will be released at the end of this year). They are also working on releasing Windows versions of their apps. I like the current products made by Affinity. Good software that while powerful, doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The developers are very different from Adobe. The developers are great, very open and friendly. You can post comments, suggestions, requests to the developers on their forum. They are nice, and they actually listen. Now of course they don't do everything that is suggested or requested but at least they listen and they often explain reasons for things that are different. I find it refreshing that the developers are so approachable. I highly recommend anyone who is looking for a good photo editor and doesn't want to pay a monthly subscription to take a look at Affinity Photo.

What do you use for asset management (***)? Importing, archiving and labeling? That's something that is still missing from Affinity Photo. Though I read somewhere that they have plans for it.

I have given up on the DAM aspect, preferring to rely on Apple filing system as after much thought I have realised there is little to be gained for me in using this extra layer of organisation (complication). Importing to ***, exporting, going round the houses from one app to another - just does not make sense for me.
Import too Apples filing system, view in FRR, open selection in Affinity, export to wherever and save back to original file does for me. The concept of the *** is simply not necessary for the photography I do. No one is pestering me for stock images, I do not share my work much anymore (reasons-too many to explain), specifically take images I want at the time and file results in clearly titled folders - easy.
I have spent so many of my retirement years trying to run my computer like my old film archive and have now realised that the amateur just does not need that to enjoy their hobby.IMHO.

As an aside; I have been a naughty boy apparently by side-stepping the profanity

[profanity |prəˈfanɪti| noun (pl.profanities) [ mass noun ] blasphemous or obscene language: an outburst of profanity.• [ count noun ] a swear word; an oath. a man with bloodied chin mouthing profanities.• irreligious or irreverent behaviour.]

regulations of the site,; i have therefor gone back and edited this post (plus the quote) so as not to do it again. All a matter of opinion in my opinion. *** knows where it will all end; especially if anyone posts an image of Mr ***** on the election trail;). As for being the arbiters of morality on the web, despite the moderator posting from the UK, I feel that possibly the word causing the admonishment itself is in such worldwide usage for everything from surprise to an illegal drug that it is possibly misnamed as profanity; especially when OMG (unsure about that one-please edit if necessary) is almost an obligatory exclamation momentarily.

Still, all done "in the best possible taste" and "rules is rules":p

Oh I forgot "archiving". Apart from backup the days of archiving my work or anyones really (other than for reference/historical reasons) are defunct, I feel. A recognised piece of art will be archived by default somewhere by someone if not the artist. As for reportage and the "I was 'ere" stuff for legal reasons in the first and no reason at all in the second. Just my feeling in this snap it if it moves/or not era.

Kind Regards

Sharkey

All above :- please edit as you see fit
