My dad has finally decided to retire the Beige G3 at his office and get a new Power Mac. The only problem is that PageMaker is not ported to OS X yet and he uses that application fairly often in his work.

My main questions are as follows: Does anyone know if PageMaker is going to be ported to OS X in the future? Also, could InDesign, Adobe's new, professional page layout software, perform the same functions as PageMaker while easily sharing files with other users of PageMaker?

If anyone has any information, it would be appreciated. I have to decide in the next week or so whether to recommend the older Power Macs that still run OS 9/Classic, or not. Thanks :) .

Personally, with InDesign I don't know why Adobe continues to maintain Pagemaker.. (although it looks like they may be stopping at PM7) Everything that pagemaker can do ID can do better. For the work I do it seems that ID is a super modern version of PageMaker.. so yes to answer your question... I am not sure about cross compatibility.. I am sure pagemaker files can be opened with indesign.. but not so sure about viceversa.. if you want me to test it let me know.. I have both programs..

If you could do a little test and see how well the two programs work together that would be great. The reason that compatibility is an issue is because all of the PC's in their office still use PageMaker 7. So if InDesign could somehow save in format that PageMaker can read, my problems would be solved.

Other than that I understand that InDesign is much more professional than PageMaker, but the extra cost of the program only gives business people like my father features that they don't need. So if they would just make an OS X version of PageMaker, people that don' t need all of the features and cost of InDesign would be jubilant :D .

At one point, Adobe was offering a discount on ID 2.0 to registered owners of PM, something like half-price. I'm not sure if it is still offered, but this might be an option for you.
