I use After Effects a hell of alot, and it's such a cool program, mainly for title sequence design, or I use it as a compliler software i.e once I've done an edit in either FCP or Media 100, I import the footage into AE and add any graphics or animation, or colour correct, or even re edit material, AE is non destructive much like Media 100 and so unlike Premiere!!
To be honest AE is a pretty good editing package, because of it's non destructive tendencies, coupled with superb layer control, very good alpha support, and now with true 3D the work is fantastic....... it also allows you to RAM preview work in realtime which is cool....... You can also import PSD files, and maintain layers, effects, etc and adapt these as necessary.....
AE isn't tied in with Premiere, and works just aswell with FCP or Media 100 suites, and is truely a superb package, especially the Pro Bundle....
What makes it even better is that if you can use Live Motion u'll pretty much know the basics of animating in AE, as the timelines are so similar!!!
All in all I'd say learning it now....... FCP and Premiere are great for standard cutting but for anything Post work style...... stick it in AE!!!
