hey guys any ideas on when the latest adobe premiere will come out for OSX. i likes 6 alot. but i want OSX support and dual processor support. and i know FCP3 is great but i also want premiere for a middle ground editing software between imovie and FCP

what does premiere offer that fcp doesn't?

i like fcp because its cheaper (for education at least) and its very very easy to use

but i'm still interested in finding out what premiere can let you do

when you have video 1A and video 1B and you put your transitions between the two. its really simple and you see exactly whats happening with the timeline. FCP3 should really let that be an option.

i guess to me transitions are relatively unimportant/simple...

the basic dissolves and fades are pretty much enough and so i don't feel much need to visualize them. plus some of them are real time with fcp i believe... so that helps. but yeah, i remember the a/b thing from avid... i guess it just doesn't seem taht big a deal to me..

any particular instance when it's "necessary"?

a/b transitions can be simulated in FCP. All you're basically saying is that you like the way you do transitions in Premiere and FCP does it differently.

I've used both and I find it much easier to use FCP. One thing I haven't used yet, that I want to is After Effects. How well does that integrate with FCP or Premiere? I imagine that would be a bigger issue than the a/b transitions.

i'm not totally sure how one would integrate them specifically... i've basically used after effects for animations and masking and stuff and then rendered out a movie to bring into fcp....

any specific types of integrating you're curious about?

Since I never used After Effects, I'm not sure. I had the impression that it went hand in hand with Premiere, but if that's not the case, great!

I'm in a situation where I've got way too many things on my plate and I don't have the resourses to get into another software package. But I do know that someday I will be using AE. If there is no special relationship, I'll just stick to using FCP and be very happy.

Thanks.

well i'm sure there are people here who'd know better than i, but i have used all 3 apps (premiere the least ever since fcp...) and i don't know of anything in particular that would require "great integration" per se... as i said i just render whatever i'm doing in ae and then dump it into fcp.

also, you can use ae plug ins with fcp, so that's somewhat helpful, though i have found that for effects ae is just much better, allowing for more control. that's obvious, given that that's the nature of the app.

i recently used ae to mask something which i'd have previously thought impossible based on fcp's 8 point masks and such. time consuming, but the end result is pretty cool indeed...

I've used Premiere since version 4. We use 6 now at work, and I hate it! Settings that once were simple in 4/5 have become poorly designed and problematic.

So now I'm teaching myself FCP3 and saying to HELL with Premiere...

I use After Effects a hell of alot, and it's such a cool program, mainly for title sequence design, or I use it as a compliler software i.e once I've done an edit in either FCP or Media 100, I import the footage into AE and add any graphics or animation, or colour correct, or even re edit material, AE is non destructive much like Media 100 and so unlike Premiere!!

To be honest AE is a pretty good editing package, because of it's non destructive tendencies, coupled with superb layer control, very good alpha support, and now with true 3D the work is fantastic....... it also allows you to RAM preview work in realtime which is cool....... You can also import PSD files, and maintain layers, effects, etc and adapt these as necessary.....

AE isn't tied in with Premiere, and works just aswell with FCP or Media 100 suites, and is truely a superb package, especially the Pro Bundle....

What makes it even better is that if you can use Live Motion u'll pretty much know the basics of animating in AE, as the timelines are so similar!!!

All in all I'd say learning it now....... FCP and Premiere are great for standard cutting but for anything Post work style...... stick it in AE!!!

After Effects is indespensible for motion graphics.. i cannot imagine not using it.... its like photoshop; but for video...

as far as the premiere vs FCP that is a matter of preference; and what your company has... you need to use the tools you are given... personally i prefer FCP and agree with Rower_CPU about the overall unnecessary complexity that has muddied up premiere...

from what i have seen PC users usually use premiere and apple users use FCP.... its more professional and less cumbersome...

after effects has to be tied in with premiere. the're both adobe products so they have to work hand in hand. and i know that after effects has no problem working with FCP, M100, and Avid.
