And those people will now follow their master and forget how they said Flash is REQUIRED for a "full web experience".

Of course it is! No full web experience is complete without big, flashy ads!

I think it's more because of the fact that Apple did not support Flash on their mobile devices. They can really change the game. Adobe was originally going to try and keep going with Flash, but they didn't want to lose customers from Apple's massive pressure.

It's like short-selling a massive number of shares of some stock and watching the price plummet, making it look like you predicted it. Steve did not predict anything, but he did make a wise choice and decided that Flash has got to be fixed or killed.

The last thing Apple seems to want to do is support a bad standard, and if they had let Flash grow unchecked, it would be unstoppable. The turn to video streaming is a window of opportunity for a change like this, and now it's very embarrassing for Android phones that were bragging about Flash. Also, why support Flash on iOS if all it does is load ads and watch a few videos that have HTML5 or Quicktime versions anyway?

I applaud Steve's bravery in fighting bad standards like Flash, Blu Ray, HDMI, and USB, but it seems that Apple has given in to USB 3.0 and HDMI post-Steve. I'm not making any assumptions about what he would have done here, but I'm sad that HDMI is taking over. It really sucks.

I agree with most of your points. But USB 3 is not a bad standard ;).

For those who are saying that Flash is dead - it isn't dead, it has been rolled up and now part of the AIR application development perform which is where Adobe is focusing its energy on. There may not be flash plugin put it will appear on your iOS, Android or Windows Phone device but in the form of an application framework.

Under Jobs Apple was the first computer maker to jump into USB w/both feet (original iMac), around the same time Apple rolled out the proprietary Apple Display Connector instead of using the standard DVI, Apple touted DVD Studio Pro as the first desktop solution to be able to burn an HD-DVD (even though it was a hack that only made discs playable on select devices), Apple eventually joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, and back in 2010 both :apple:TV and Mac Mini started shipping with HDMI.

I'm not sure how bravery factors into anything being discussed here, but to each their own.

Jobs didn't care about HTML5.

It was just an excuse to ban Flash, for whatever good or bad reasons. He could even have just been mad at Adobe. It's not like he wasn't known for taking revenge.

The funny thing is that Apple's head cheerleader Walt Mossberg originally wrote in his column that Flash support was coming soon for the new iPhone:

"At launch, the iPhone version of the Safari browser is missing some plug-ins needed for playing common types of Web videos. The most important of these is the plug-in for Adobe’s Flash technology," Mossberg wrote. "Apple says it plans to add that plug-in through an early software update, which I am guessing will occur within the next couple of months."

This helped mollify early buyers since the iPhone could not play the Flash based videos that were ubiquitous on the web at the time.

Fortunately for Apple, Google helped out by translating their YouTube videos to Apple's format, although it took quite some time for that to make real headway. Even by early 2008 there were not a lot.

How soon people forget history.

Still Flash dominates on desktop with no end in site. 90% of the "rich" sites are on Flash still. When will ESPN3 switch to HTML5?

I don't care about flash too. But it's a bit nifty being able to view HD videos via Flash.

Anyway, Chrome on pre-existing ICS devices already lack Flash support and YouTube now plays via HTML5.

USB actually isn't bad, but it's bad compared to Firewire and Thunderbolt.

USB 3 is faster than firewire ;)

USB,has been and will keep being the industry standard. Thunderbolt is far to expensive to replace usb in anything but high end devices.

What's wrong with hdmi? Or blu ray? My blu ray player hooked up to my plasma looks great
