engadget is reporting about adobe's response to Job's open letter

We believe that consumers should be able to freely access their favorite content and applications, regardless of what computer they have, what browser they like, or what device suits their needs. No company - no matter how big or how creative - should dictate what you can create, how you create it, or what you can experience on the web.

When markets are open, anyone with a great idea has a chance to drive innovation and find new customers. Adobe's business philosophy is based on a premise that, in an open market, the best products will win in the end - and the best way to compete is to create the best technology and innovate faster than your competitors.

We believe that Apple, by taking the opposite approach, has taken a step that could undermine this next chapter of the web - the chapter in which mobile devices outnumber computers, any individual can be a publisher, and content is accessed anywhere and at any time.

In the end, we believe the question is really this: Who controls the World Wide Web? And we believe the answer is: nobody - and everybody, but certainly not a single company.

So THAT'S their reply?

They could have done much better than this.

The ad just looks silly and accusatory.

Adobe's actual letter doesn't refute Apple's stance that Flash is seriously flawed and inappropriate for use on portable devices. Nor does it address Apple's biggest concern, that allowing Flash on Apple mobile devices would seriously impede platform development and put Apple at the mercy of Adobe.

I expected a much better response than that.

Oh, here's Apple's "Thoughts on Flash":
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

I feel that it's a MUCH better letter than Adobe's.

Now I'm even less likely to go CS5,
Keri

PS. Apple isn't "trying to control the web" here. They're just trying to control the perceived Quality of Apple products. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy an iPhone or iPad. If you gotta have Flash, why not buy something else?

PPS. If THIS is Adobe's best shot, I'd be more than happy to write a better reply than that. For a nominal fee that is. :D:p;)

I'm not a big fan of their Flash product but Adobe does have a point. I like my choice and I choose to avoid using Flash whenever possible. :D

They don't address the fact that Flash is bad software, nor do they refute Apple's right not to support software that impairs the functionality and squanders the resources of their hardware.

Wow...what a load of self-serving ******** from Adobe. Them complaining about closed standards has to be some kind of a joke. Closed standards have been the name of their game since before Apple forced them to make Postscript open standard, and goes all the way from then (lat 80's) to the more recent struggle to make PDF an open standard.

Read the history of Postscript. All of this has happened before, and will happen again.

I can't tell if Adobe's move comes from fear or desperation.

From the looks of that letter, I'd say both.
With a WHOLE LOT of Stupidity, Hubris and just plain Patheticity mixed in for good measure.

Who wrote that?
A "Trophy Secretary"?
Someone's Grade School kid who was over for "Bring Your Child To Work" Day?
A plant from Apple to make Adobe look bad?

I Know! It must've been CHINESE HACKERS!

Here's my first draft for a vastly improved rebuttal:

" "

Adobe should immediately adopt all of the writing between the two quote marks above until they have something to say that's worth saying.

Wow! I'd have never thought a major company like Adobe would pull that kind of stunt,
Keri
