Adobe trying to kill Fireworks?

I don't know -- why would you think that? I don't use Illustrator much but it doesn't strike me as very useful for the things I use Fireworks for. Given that Fireworks was updated to CS3 along with everything else, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

No. I noticed FW hadn't improved much for CS3 though (slightly faster on mac though... that's good!) but it could be merged into Photohops but I really doubt it. FW is both vector and raster. We'll see what happen in CS4.

I doubt it very much. Fireworks is a strong package for web graphics. Illustrator is not designed for the same, and for that purpose, it's bloated and slow.
Even Photoshop isn't up to scratch with Fireworks' web stuff.... which is why, I'd say, it's still alive.
There's no point in panicking and changing to another package. I'd say it'll stay - but if it does get depreciated, it'll be rolled in to PS, not Illustrator. What's more, all the functionality would be maintained in a replacement product.

Fireworks and Illustrator are not the same kind of thing at all - certainly you cannot use one to do the job of the other. Illustrator is a vector drawing/illustration package. Fireworks is a bitmap editor similar to Adobe's old ImageReady application.
It's possible that Adobe _might_ discontinue Fireworks in favour of photoshop, but I rather doubt it as they appeal to different markets. My feeling is that if Adobe were planning to replace Fireworks, they wouldn't have discontinued ImageReady...

I love Fireworks more than Photoshop especially when it comes to designing sites and prototyping. Given its tight integration with Dreamweaver before the Adobe merger, it was my preferred app for those mentioned tasks. I find myself using PS more for photoediting chores more than anything else.
I hope they keep FW. It is one of the best in dealing with both raster and vector images. I find PS a little tedious to use and launch given what a bloatware it is compared to FW.
