So I'm looking at purchasing LR5, but with the release of LR6 apparently just around the corner... does anyone know if Adobe has a formal 30/60 day free upgrade if a new version is released, especially if this is available for educational versions (purchased -- not interested in CC). Can't find any info online on this.

I would guess not because its most people's expectation that LightRoom 6 will be subscription only. There's been nothing stated by Adobe of course but given the changes to LR5 (only the edit module is disabled for expired subscriptions), they seem to be positioning themselves for such a move.
Latest rumours is that you will still be able to buy LR 6 as a stand alone App.

The beta for LR6 is probably just around the corner, and the beta period will probably last a couple of months (so if you buy LR5 now, you probably won't be eligible for a free upgrade).
I'd wait to purchase the new version, since you'll be able to use the beta version for free until the final version goes on sale.

Good to know that only the edit (develop?) module is disabled when my trial subscription expires -- hoping this is the case, as I'm hoping to hear something about LR6 before making the final jump in.
I can confirm this is the case, I had the trial LR5 expire on me, everything worked but the Edit module.
Problem is can we trust Adobe with a stand alone app? My Master Collection CS4, although possible to run on Yosemite, did not want to run the way I would like it to. Ended up uninstalling it.

I'd say under the circumstances, I'd say no.
I'm surprised there does seem to be some rumors that LR6 will be available in a non-subscription purchase model. I fully expected this, so if not in L6, then probably LR7. Exception for LR, I think all of adobe's software is only available by subscription. I can't imagine LR continuing to be the lone outcast (yes acrobat reader is free but that doesn't count
)
