So I saw an article on Gizmodo about a robot drawing ads on the moon that could be seen from Earth. It looks like it's only a press release/possibility at this time fortunately.

So what do you guys think will happen first? Ads large enough to be seen from Earth or a space colony?

It seems like if both were to happen you would want ads to happen first as it would probably take up a good portion of the landscape. Eventually it would be torn down and a colony go overtop it. Ads would also hopefully fund the colony to go up in the first place.

Of course, seeing a Nike swoosh or McDonald's logo in the night sky seems just plain wrong anyway. And I can't even imagine what a person without access to modern news outlets would think when they saw the moon change.

This makes me wonder, who owns the moon anyway and would they be renting it out to advertisers? That just seems really odd. But I don't see having a space colony on the moon being very successful, because the moon has no natural resources that we could use. It would cost a lot more money than it would bring in.

Considering that there are so many problems with a space colony and we live under this thing called capitalism, yeah.

As far as the moon is concerned though, there are other countries that have access to it. Since I don't believe anybody "owns" the moon (at least from Earth!) I'm not sure how easily ads would be to get on there.

I just hope the ads are classy, seeing as I can't stop it, I may as well enjoy it.

It'll be Geico wont it?

GoDaddy or GoldenPalace. :)

The problems associated with a space colony and the sheer cost of it, lead me to believe that Coke is going to try to get there second (well, before the colony).

I started thinking about this more, and its making me mad.

"Oh honey, doesn't the dancing gecko on the moon look beautiful tonight? Almost as lovely as the stars they re-arranged for the constalation of Viagra. Its looking quite proud and erect tonight."

SOME THINGS SHOULD NOT BE F***** WITH!

Most likely the ads, since they use robots, and everyone knows it is not possible for humans to travel outside the Van Allen radiation belts, without getting fried. That's why NASA had to fake the Apollo landings, and the Soviet Union gave up.

Using the moon as a giant advertisement is just plain wrong.

I think any company that dared to ruin the stunning and beautiful moonscape could end up with a worldwide backlash against the product it was promoting.

I doubt if I will see a colony on the moon in my lifetime. I remember the excitement of the first moon landing but they haven't made a lot of progress in the last 40 years. The cost of getting everything up there is just too prohibitive.

If they were both a certainty ads probably would make it first, however, I don't see either of these things happening anytime soon.

The moon could be used as a jump point because of the reduced gravity we wouldn't need as many resources to liftoff. Then again we could just use a space station.

That's true, it would make more sense to use the moon as a space station than to put a colony on there. But that would still make it pretty costly to maintain, as you would need regular trips to and from the moon to transfer food, water, fuel, etc. For all the trouble, you might as well use an orbiting space station.

oh haha... people not happy about defacing the moon's natural beauty.... but yet look what we have done to the earth...;)

depends on what size the ad should be.

if it something to look at with a telescope, then definitively and ad, but if it is supposed to be seen by the naked eye, the sheer size of it would be astounding, it might take tens of year to carve it by a single robot (assuming that it would done by some sort of 'digging/carving', without additional materials other than the robot itself)

the diameter of the moon is around 3500 km, so a 300 miles swoosh would probably work.

This reminds me of that Disney Channel Movie "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century" where she lives on an space colony orbiting the Earth.

Coming soon to a moon near you!

If we pooled together a few billion I bet we could get a MR logo on there. I'll set up a paypal account for you guys to deposit the money in... *cough*

I really hope they don't do this. I would be so annoyed :\ We've already screwed up the earth, so now we're moving onto the moon?!

Agreed. :mad::mad::mad:
