Anybody know if overclocking the Radeon x1600 256mb in a MBP will make much of a difference?

I game a lot: HL2, DOD Source, CounterStrike Source and F.E.A.R. Combat. So far the MBP has been pretty smooth with all these games, and when F.E.A.R. is set on medium settings. But I am planning to buy C&C3 and a few other games in the future and I fear that the x1600 will start to show its age sooner or later.

So will I see a noticeable difference if I OC? I know the heating risks, but what if I get a laptop cooler?

here a thread about one who o'clocked the 128mb, for reference.

I cannot find a program out there that supports Vista. ATI Tool doesn't do it. Anybody know a good Radeon OCling tool that supports Vista?

Don't bother with Vista, it'll eat 1GB of your RAM right off the bat, so unless you're running 3GB of RAM in your MBP, stick with XP.

And you'll see extremely nice FPS boosts if you're overclocking a CD machine.

Well I have a 15'' 2.33ghz C2D MBP

Can I still OC it? I've heard that Apple has stopped underclocking their Core 2 Duos. But I need a verification on this. And what program can I use to see my GPU speed?

bump

i must know if the 2.33 C2D MBP already come properly clocked or still underclocked like the CD was.

Maybe this will help?

So you see, the Core 2 Duo model's GPU ramps up to higher frequencies than the Core Duo model. That's going to help when the app is GPU bound. And it appears to explain the 48% advantage we measured while running Doom 3 at the native 1680x1050 resolution.

Comparison table near bottom of review.

Edit: Might want to look here as well if you're interested in bumping up those clock speeds.
