you get more apps and cool things to download as a user. You can still download the other apps from app store. However, the ones after you jailbreak are better (like the video recording app).

have u seen the "post your screenboard" thread?!?!?

customization, thats y, u can change any and every little thing on the phone.

and the sweet apps

I restored my iPhone 3G specifically to remove the jailbreak. Since 3G, it's been worthwhile for me to switch from vodafone to O2 and since the App Store was launched, the only hack I'd been using was Winterboard, anyway.

All of the applications that I used under 1.1.4 have been replaced by superior, reasonably priced (or free) alternatives on the app store and I'm also not convinced that there are no stability or performance penalties inherent in the procedure.

Jailbreaking's advantages have all but evaporated for me and I don't think it's worth missing out on updates like the up-coming 2.1.

Errr...ummm...there are several apps that you absolutely can't get in the app store. None of them may be of interest to you, but there are several. One of my new favs is Cycorder. There is no alternative whatsoever in the App Store.

We have two iPhones in my family (mine is the only one jailbroken) and there is absolute no difference in stability. I've spent numerous hours with my wife's phone and the behavior (both positive and negative) is quite similar.

are those apps/themes in Cydia after you jailbreak completely free?

pretty much from what i've seen. i have yet to 'purchase' a program off cydia.

but i'm sure there are a few and iphonevideorecorder is one of them, $20. but then there's cycorder, free.

It is also possible to get all most of the app store apps for free :D I have loadsa games and apps that should have cost me $100's that a got for free.

Tethering to ur laptop....

Tethering to ur laptop....

These are the main two reason that I jailbroke.

after jailbroken my 3g, I noticed that I can not access the "mobile phone" button to call people anymore. I have to use contacts to make calls. Everytime people called me, it exited out of the "mobile phone" screen back to the main menu screen. Why is this? So I can't use speaker or numeric pad anymore

Tethering to your Laptop is the one of the main reason for my Jailbreak. The best set of apps to Tether to the laptop is:

iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 (Hardly mentioned anywhere but it works GREAT) and does not require Socks proxy. Just Openssh
Proxifier
Insomnia to keep the Net running. Infact sending this from my iphone Internet on my laptop in SFO.
Double speed of Netshare. Can browse and also talk on the phone while maintain inet connection

offcourse the other is Apps. but I'd care less ad I'd rather buy them

In a nutshell:

• More customization
• More apps
• Video recording capability.
• Ability to get certain apps for free, when you would otherwise have to purchase it from the AppStore.

There's more, but those are the main points, really.

If only they allowed theme customization on an unbroken phone, I wouldn't have had to jailbreak mine. I wouldn't mind supporting and paying for the Apps I really like.

So, the ability to steal a dollar's worth of software from an independent developer is an advantage, is it?

No one is forcing you to steal. All you have to do is choose not to do it.

Seriously, you can waffle all you like about piracy not being theft. I understand individuals (who aren't using the software professionally) pirating from global-megacorps who charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their products. That can be seen as a political statement and no one at these companies suffers one bit. But withholding a buck or two from an independent developer is just wrong. People like these rely on sales to put food on their families' tables.

I understand jailbreaking.

But at the moment there is no unlock option for 3g from at&t correcT? like i cant just buy and unlock and use it on another carrier?

I never said it was an advantage. I was merely stating what could be done with a jailbroken phone.

No one is forcing you to steal. All you have to do is choose not to do it.

I didn't say I did. I said I didn't mind paying for apps I like and think are worth it. Why would I download it otherwise? So please don't accuse me of "thieving" from independent developers when I made no mention of such.

You mean have all evaporated? "Have all but evaporated" would imply that there'd still be significant advantage.

Five icon dock.
Themes.
Applications that are not available in the App Store.
Applications that cannot be approved by Apple due to "sandbox" rules.
Ability to utilize phone as a slightly dumbed down unix workstation.
Remote administration of my servers and the ability to work from anywhere.
Additional games (the legal kind).
Ability to change text message tones from the worthless six that come with the phone.
Total control over /MY/ phone.

It's mine, I own it and as a result I should be able to do what I wish with it, so long as I don't break any copyright laws.

Since the 2.1 upgrade, I'm dying over here with a non-jailbroken phone. The user experience is completely different. The phone is light-years better with the additional functionality that is available from the jailbreak. This is a powerful device, but you'd never know it with the standard firmware load.

p.s. Yes, I know there is a method to jailbreak 2.1 on Windows. But I'm not thrilled about downgrading iTunes and have it go through my music library to set up the Genius playlists again (since it took several hours due to the size of my legal music library).

What I meant was "have mostly evaporated' and I still feel that way. However, I was anticipating a much longer wait for pwnage and quickpwn than 1 day so I used quickpwn this afternoon to regain my themes.

You can download Paid apps for free! - Which also means you can tether your iphone with your laptop and get free internet wherever you go!

Don't worry. We all knew exactly what you meant. ;)
