Advice about mba, please?

Hi,

So I have a 15.4" SR baseline MacBook Pro purchased last year, cost me $1999, but I sold the free iPod for 180$ surprisingly so the expense amounted to $1820 I suppose (forget the tax for now). I have an offer for the MacBook Pro for $1700. Seeing as there will be new updates soon, my current machine is sure to depreciate quickly (well, I'd have to sell it for at least one hundred dollars less, I suppose). I wanted a smaller notebook - I already have a 24" iMac at home and I realize I exclusively use the MacBook Pro for taking notes in class and internet surfing. It's crucial for me to take notes on - wouldn't be able to survive classes doing it with a pen and paper! Anyways, commuting every day with a smaller and lighter notebook would be nicer and the smaller size of the laptop would allow it to fit easier on the tiny tables...

Anyways, I like keeping up with all the new, cool stuff that comes out. To me, I'd rather upgrade more frequently than once every 4 years, because at the end of 4 years, the laptop is practically worth nothing, yet after a year, it will still keep its value.

So the question - do you think it's worth it to sell the mbp for 1700 and then pay around $300 (with tax and all...) to upgrade to a new machine (that suits my needs perfectly)?

At the end of the day when I get home, I don't even use a USB key to transfer my notes to the iMac...I do it all wirelessly. I really have no use for an optical drive as I already have it in the iMac. The MBA looks really great and would be more practical for me than the pro. So, is it a good move?

If I was you, I will go with the MacBook, and use the rest of the money to get either an iPhone, Time Capsule, etc..........

im in the same situation as you well almost

i have a mbp also and i have a mac pro at home
i sold my mbp and got myself a mba

and serious it was sooo worth it!
and the "sacrifice" of those ports and the dvd drive has not phase me at all
i thought it would but i guess i truly know how little i use all those ports haha

if you travel alot especially by transit.. it's a godsend to have such a light and thin laptop.. i don't' care about how the footprint isn't smaller than macbook as it's just in my backpack and it's not like i'm carrying around a purse only

in short.. yes get it! it's awesome!
and if you need the speed or the dvd drive just use your imac =)

eh, i'd stick with the MBP. I have one too, and was slightly tempted to get the MBA, but I went to see it in person. It's light, it's everything everybody says it is, but is it any much more portable than my MBP? No. My MBP goes everywhere and does more. The MBA focuses on a very small niche market, and I doubt anybody *needs* it.

Also the whole train of thought of always needing the newest and best is overdone. You probably won't get $1700 for your MBP (I paid $1699 for mine, new, over a year ago), and you're content with what you have, right? Try to save up for the future. The next MBA and MBP will be even better than what you have, but you can't go into a spending spree every half year.

as a fellow college student who also can't keep up in class with just a pen and paper, i'd say YES to selling your mbp for a mba. i got to play with one at work and was in total awe of it. immediately told my mom to order one for herself. i really want to get a mba for myself as well, but i don't have another computer handy and i plan on playing games occasionally, so the lack of an optical drive kinda kills it for me so i'll be going with a mbp (if they ever update it). but for your situation..YES get a mba!

I have several offers already at 1700. In fact, I am meeting someone on Friday at the bank to proceed with the transaction. However, if I was convinced here i'd probably back out and keep the mbp.

I always have two. A desktop and a laptop. So if I get a new desktop, then I get rid of the old one, and the same with the laptop.

Just do whatever suits your needs. You know what they are more than anyone else here so trust your common sense

The macbook air seems like a really great machine, and I think it would be better put to use than the macbook pro I have now. I also think I have a great offer on the pro at the moment, too. I just sort of feel "bad" trading in a laptop that's in perfectly good condition!

I seem to sell off my old hardware to justify the purchase of new hardware all the time. I say go for it. Technology moves too fast to sit and wait and if you are like me, which it sounds like you are. You kind of want to have what's new despite actually needing it. I took the plunge with my abandonment of my Windows home built rig and sold it for far less than it was worth but it justified my IMac. My MBA on the other hand was not a necessity but I just had to have it. I can tell you this much, I don't regret the purchase one bit.

I have to be honest when I say that knowing myself, I will probably want the new MBP when it is released if they actually get a redesign and are slightly thiner than the current model. But I do love the AIR for what it is.

Yes I feel the same way. This time, though, the air will cost me very little to have because of the amazing deal I'm getting for the pro. I'm into computers a lot, and don't like using a 5 year old computer. I make compromises in other places, haha. Some people like cars, some people like clothes, shoes, etc. We chose something else! lol
