Short version if you don't want to read all of the detail:
The home button has stopped working on my iPod Touch 1st Gen. I am positive it is not a software issue... I have never dropped it and there are almost no scratches (so its in good condition) Should I take it to an Apple genius? It is out of warranty, but do you think there is any chance of Apple replacing it for free? If not, could anyone take any guess of what repairs would cost?

What has happened and what I have done so far:
About a week before OS 3.0 came out, I started to notice that I have to press my home button harder to exit out of an app. Then a few days after 3.0 came out, I upgraded to it and the same thing was happening. Just to let you know, I am always jailbroken. Now, the home button is not functional AT ALL. The only way to exit an app is to reboot, which can be very annoying if I have to do that every 30 seconds.
I have tried many different things like pressing the home and power buttons repeatedly, which is supposed to be a way to fix this that I found here on youtube. I have also tried restoring my iPod and no luck. (And now I cant jailbreak again because I need the home button to get into DFU mode)
I started a chat on the Apple online store and the person a talked with said it would be a better idea to buy a new one than to spend the money to fix it. So I really have no clue how much it would cost to repair. I am thinking I would have to replace the entire logic board to the part where the home button is.

Any ideas?

Sorry for starting a new thread with a similar problem that other people were having. I posted in other threads but never got any feedback.

There is a add-on for SBSettings that is for people with broken home buttons.

Thx for the reply. I had SBSettings a few days ago. I thought my problem could be a software issue so I restored... but unfortunately I was wrong. And now I can't get it again because to jailbreak, I need to get into DFU mode which I need the home button to do.

Do you think there is any chance Apple would replace it for free or only charge for shipping to get it repaired?

Thanks!
