Hi Everyone

After some advice. I currently have an iMac 27" Late 2012 - which is still going strong although can't run Big Sur of course. So I'm looking at moving to an M1 Mac Mini, mostly for Video editing and Logic Audio work. Appreciate the 16GB limit on the mini but will have to live with it I suspect.

My main concern is the monitor - I fancy a curved monitor - LG, Samsung and others make some nice ones but having read the forums there's lots of different challenges people seem to have with monitors in general - and I'm not an expert and its all quite confusing. My inclination is to go with a USB-C compatible one, or thunderbolt3 (which I believe uses the USB-C connector but they seem few and far between indeed). I want a resolution of something like 3440x1440 (or higher) and don't really want anything much bigger than 34". What do you guys suggest?

Many thanks

B

You shouldn't have any issues with a QHD (1440) or 4K monitor on any Mac. I would suggest looking at monitors that use the Display Port connector instead of limiting yourself to USB-C. Since DP 1.2 is supported over Thunderbolt 3, you can run a USB-C to Display Port cable to the monitor.

I have the M1 mini and use two Dell S3220DGF displays connected via HDMI (I also have a thunderbolt dock with the 2nd HDMI port). No issues at all.

I am using LG 34WL85C on my M1 Mac mini with 8GB RAM.

  • USB hub works fine
  • There is no sleep/wake issues. My previous Dell U2713HM had trouble waking up.
  • Colors look accurate--though my colorimeter doesn't work on M1 Mac to confirm
  • Built-in speaker works fine through HDMI
  • PIP feature works fine but it only does 50/50 and not any other ratios
  • I don't have LG software installed, so can't confirm if that works or not

Thanks everyone so far - so am i correct in thinking that audio is only available over HDMI? Does it work over USBC, Thunderbold or Display Port?
