My sister is going back to nursing school and since she has a dinky 2011 macbook air 11in laptop. I was thinking of letting her have my laptop for the 2-4 years she's going back to school. I currently have a 2017 Macbook Pro 128gb SSD. I use my iphone xs max and iPad Pro 11 95% of the time but I do need a laptop for the 5%. I have an external 2tb harddrive I use to store music, photos, etc... movies as well. Its kinda annoying to offload stuff but that's what 128gb gets me.

I have a side consulting gig that I do for 2-4x a year and that involves using page documents, pdf, online research online, and synthesizing information with interviews to write a report. That's one thing I need laptop for.

I was thinking about a 2015 macbook pro 15 inch. One, is I want a mac that I can keep long term and store music, pictures, movies for a long time, long time. It doesn't make sense to buy new because again I use my ipad and iphone for 95% of my use(there are periods when I do not even use my macbook for months). That's one reason why I want 1tb ssd for that reason.

Some things that might be of concern is, on rare occasions, it doesn't happen too much, I might take the laptop to work. Some times I might work in my car and type documents for 30mins to an hr. But that's a few handful of times that's happened. I'm not used to a big laptop. I don't think I've owned a 15 inch laptop in over 13 yrs! I always buy 13 inch. Also I like to work on coffee shops when I do this consulting work so the size might be a bummer (gotta reward myself with a latte for working on the weekends). One thing that stinks is I'm all in on usb-c so that's a bummer to go back to a propriety charging standard.

So does the 15 in macbook pro make sense for me? I figure with 16gb ram, the AMD radeon r9 graphics card m370x it should last me a long time and won't lag. Plus the keyboard is classic and should last me a long long time (unlike my 2017 keyboard which is till covered under the apple keyboard warranty, so I don't trust it long term). Finally having a big screen would be great for working on multiple documents plus a few web browsers.

I'm open to suggestions. Also if you got a 2015 macbook, where did you get it if you bought it used?

I'm not a really happy Mac user so don't value my suggestion much, but it seems 13" would suite you better. It's compact and light and lives more on the battery. If you don't have a demand for heavy tasks or awesome sound, you'd better look at smaller brother

I have 2 2015 MBP i7 base and they have been workhorses even to this day.

My wife uses one home and I use the other for work doing a lot of remote desktop.

The only issue they both had were the displays - they both had delaminating screens which had to be replaced under Apple's extended warranty...
