Means I can put my current Apple stock HDD in it and use it as an external drive? Do you just format it the stock HDD once your up and running on your new HD?

Firewire is esential when you own a mac. Booting from a drive, or having a disk to target to is too important.
I would also go with another drive. Death Stars are slow compared to the competition. And the 7200RPM drives are no faster than the perpendicular recording drives. My recomendation is to get a perpendicular recording 120GB-160GB drive. That way you can leave more free space for virtual memory, so you can keep that macbook running fast.

good catch. yes you want an SATA drive. sorry for any confusion. I wish they would hurry up and stop making PATA drives already.
