Firewire is esential when you own a mac. Booting from a drive, or having a disk to target to is too important.
I would also go with another drive. Death Stars are slow compared to the competition. And the 7200RPM drives are no faster than the perpendicular recording drives. My recomendation is to get a perpendicular recording 120GB-160GB drive. That way you can leave more free space for virtual memory, so you can keep that macbook running fast.
