Advice needed: mix laptop with desktop?

It looks like a lot of folks on this forum have both desktops and laptops. If you have both, how do you manage your files? Is there a way to sync folders? do you just scatter them around? Is one for work and one for play? are they exact copies of each other? I keep trying to figure out how to best work this combination, because I'm considering either trading up my old laptop for a new laptop or just buying a new desktop (and keeping the laptop).

Chime in with your suggestions for file management, etc.

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't really. If there is something I must have on both machines, I'll just plug an ethernet cable between the two and enable fire sharing from the system preferences.

Probably the easiest/prettiest way is to subscribe to .mac and use their built in syncing function.

I do have some scattered files yes, but I'm not too anal about it so it doesn't bother me. I do do more school work on my iBook that is why I got it-- to take to and from school. And I do make an effort to keep songs/games/ other apps on my iMac G5. I also don't really bother w/ address book/ contacts because, well, I don't have many and I can honestly remember most of their email and snail mail addresses and phone #s.

Although I don't have a desktop and a laptop, I use iDisk to sync my folders/files between home and work. Basically, I keep any files related to current projects on my iDisk so I always have them in both places. Once a project is complete, I move the files to my hard drive on my home Mac where I can access them later or move them back to iDisk if necessary. Hope this helps.

.Mac syncs my stuff, and i keep most work stuff on my powermac only moving things to powerbook when i am in school
