I think you’d be just fine with a 2016 MB. That would be a step up from refurbished which is what I was thinking when the time comes to replace my 13
I originally got a 13” Macbook since I wanted one that would fit in the saddle bag of my Harley. (Late 2008 uni-body aluminum....pre Macbook Pro)
Over time I added ram, swapped to an SSD and replaced the battery thinking sooner the better. I forget which OS I am running, (Yosemite?) but this rig will support two more OS updates. This is a ten year old laptop and it is still bulletproof. It originally came with Leopard and I went straight to Snow Leopard and on from there.
I’d suggest as fast a processor as you can find in your budget knowing you can pretty much pump up all the other internals when the time comes.
Buying Macs isn’t cheap, but I have friends that have replaced numerous Windows machines in the time I’ve had 10 trouble-free years on my 13. Nevermind all the BS that comes with running Windows. I can’t fathom the logic of buying four or five inexpensive, hence, slow Windows machines and putting up with them all those years when the same money gets you a fast MB that gives no problems and lasts at least the same length of time and is literally upgradable forever.
Spend the money on getting the fastest processor available on the 2016 15 and get an idea what ram and SSDs will cost you if you decide to pump it up.
I have had great luck using OWC. (Mac upgrade specialists)
I wouldn’t even think twice about saving a pile of cash by going back a couple of years. Just do a bit of homework about what hardware limitations a 2016 has versus new ones. For example, my 13 will not support Airplay and a couple of other things that escape me right now. Apple, or OWC will be able to tell you about any newer hardware developments that have happened since 2016 that might impact you. You have me thinking to hold off and look at new, prior year models instead of refurbished when the time comes, but for my use, my 2008 is still great. Just my two bits worth. S

Go with a 2017 MacBook pro 13 inch. Don't spend 1200 on a 1.6ghz dual core(MacBook air).
Absolutely concur. I think buying an AIR immediately puts a damper on future upgrades. My kid bought an AIR without any thought just to save some coin and I’m not sure she can even replace the battery. OTOH, I have no idea what you can do on your own regarding any of the newer MBs either. S

Thanks very much for the replies. I'm still very undecided! The weight of the machine doesn't matter at all - I never take my laptop out with me, and work with it on my lap for much of the day; any MacBook is going to be much lighter than my current Windows machine. It also wouldn't suit my way of working to use an external monitor, so the screen size is important.
I would definitely prefer a 15" screen, but am anxious about buying a late 2016 MacBook Pro, albeit a brand new, unopened one. The other issue is that if I buy the 13" MacBook Air, I would buy this from John Lewis, where I would get a 3 year warranty and I could return it to a store if there was a problem, whereas the 2016 15" MacBook Pro would be purchased from an online retailer, who has good reviews, but would just give the standard one year warranty. This is really difficult!!
NO AIR!!!! The key is future upgradeability. Get the fastest processor you can get in the 2016 MBP.
