I have decided to make the switch from PC to Mac. I have narrowed my choices down to a new imac G5, or a Mac Mini with a new Apple 20" monitor.

This machine is just for home. Web surfing watching a few movies and the occasional work related stuff. Nothing to taxing. The only given is I want a "20 screen.

Is the Mac mini good enough for me? Would I be better off getting the Imac G5?

Any help is appreciated.

I guess this is like the ultimate question at the moment.......For me I went with an imac 20". I did this because...

1. All the components are bigger / faster
2. In two years I think the imac will have "lost" less money if I were to sell it. On the basis that the mini will be extreeeeeeemely outdated by this time.
3. I wouldnt want to miss any eye candy because of of lack of graphics core support !
3. Keyboards & mice aint cheap (....a bit of a weak argument i know!!!)
4. Asthetically the imac is beautiful.......the mini ....its nice too but i would not know where to put it....
5. Built in isight is a nice toy to play with.
6. 250gb holds a lot of more music than 80Gb :)

I'd go for the iMac G5. More power more speed. Overall I think it's a better machine.

How about a 27" screen?

I have a 12" iBook, which I have opened slightly and up ended like an "A" frame. It's connected to my 27" HDTV, which I use as my primary monitor (with wireless keyboard, mouse and internet). I've often thought that a mini would work well because I could hide it even better, but every once in a while I've taken the iBook with me on vacations or to another room while my daughter's watching TV.

Just a thought!

Any particular reasons why you specifically want the Apple monitor? You can get a lot more LCD for the price if you are pairing that up with a Mini. The Dell 24" 2405FPW is the monitor of choice of a lot of people here and you can see why for the price and performance benefits over the Apple 20" for $150 more you get 4 more inches. Also, the Dell 20" is about $150 cheaper than the Apple.

The other thing to consider is that the iMac will be significantly faster than the mini, not only because of the GHz, but also that it is a G5 instead of a G4, and has a better video card.

EDIT: Wow while I made myself a cuppa tea you rendered my post moot. ;) Enjoy your new iMac!

Go to the online apple store and piece together a top model mac mini with a maxed out hard drive, keyboard and mighty mouse and a 20" display. Then take a stock iMac with 20" display, compare what you're getting.

I don't care what anyone says: For the price/performance the Dell FPW2405 smokes both the 20'' & 23'' Apple displays...I had the 23'' and now I'm the proud owner of the Dell 2405. I simply like it better.

I think you need another line or 2 in your sig. Perhaps some larger fonts and color too. Comic Sans at size 5 in fuscia looks awesome.

Mac mini would fit the bill, especially since you can hook it up to any 20" or higher LCD monitor. If you are not too concerned about 2.5" HDs and lack of RAM upgrades then it's cheaper to go with a mini.

The G5 iMac is the better value if you intend to stick with Apple displays.
