I currently have a 12" PB 1.5. I am thinking of getting a powermac to do my heavier work of encoding video and such. I have no experience at all with powermacs and would appreciate any advice. I am currently considering the 2.0 dual core. is this a good choice?

i have 2ghx dual and it's great one thing i dont like is that i can only hold 2 drives. my old mdd held 4, so either you buy big ass drives or an external drive. it's a fast machine i love it. i dont know how it will be compared to the intel stuff but i figure if the intel stuff is going to the low end machine first, then these g5 must be faster. but you never know...

and the dual core is a bit faster then my machine

The G5 will blow you away, no matter which version you get.

As for hard drives, there are a few kits on the market that allow you to install more than 2 drives internally and of course there are always external sloutions for SCSI, SATA and the usual USB/Firewire.

I'm not a video guy so I can't comment on the specific technical points, but the G5 is latest and greatest - you can hardly go wrong.

So I can expect the 2.0 dual core to be much faster than my powerbook?

Yes, yes, and YES. I went from a 17" 1.5 PB to a G5 and its light years ahead. For once the numbers won't lie. The G5 will make you proud.

My systems are almost comparable, until you look at cpu use... and then the g5 trumps the latest powerbook, even though its a 2003 g5 single!

consider a DP G4

teerexx,

I do some pretty intensive Photoshop work on my 12" Powerbook, and I have been looking at used DP G4's, which can be found for $1,000 less than a new G5 DP - the graphic artists next door, who have both single-and dual-processor G5's and G4's, say that their DP G4's are a match for the G5's in most tasks.

With the money saved you could get lots of RAM!

You'll enjoy it whatever you buy

:D

G4 DP's are old news and getting way overpriced on the resale market; consider an Apple refurb DP 1.8 or DP 2.0 which can be had for just around the $1300 price point -- a sweet pricing spot, if you ask me. Only thing is, they sell out rather quickly, so you have to keep on the lookout.

if you're going to get a dual core 2ghz mac, might as well not and get the refurbished 2.5 for the same price. Comes with great vid card and hard drive and all. It might be worth it
