Hi guys, i've seen similar topics like this before so sorry if you've already been through the motions on this question but i just wanted a definitive answer:

I'm soon to be inheriting a 2008 mac pro (i can't say for sure the exact specs yet but assume the most basic for the 2008 3,1 model and probably running snow leopard) and I want to do what i can to turn it into a reasonable rig for pc gaming.

As such i plan on upgrading the graphics card and have spent long hours trying to work out which are and aren't compatible, before finally seeing that it is possible to have 2 graphics cards, the mac's original to run osx and a shiny new (by which i probably mean cheap, secondhand) one to run windows on (xp for the moment then probably upgrading to 8 soon).

Am i right in thinking this will work, with the cards in two different slots, independently connected to the same monitor (i.e. by two different cables) and how does the computer/me choose the appropriate card for each startup? And for that matter how do i manage bootcamp and switching between mac and pc?

Finally any advice on the graphics card itself, bearing in mind that given the above answer is yes it has no need to be mac compatible, i was considering the radeon HD 6870 but would also look into anything around the £100 mark that would hopefully not be too ambitous for this slightly old machine?

Thanks for any help you can give

Im in a similar boat with my 2008 3,1 and looking to upgrade my graphics card. From what I have read, I think that the GTX 570 is the card that I am going to go with. Seems like the better choice over the 600 series as far as I can tell.

I am not sure regarding having both the factory card and the new PC card, but I seem to recall that the 570 cards work better in slot 2.

I'm also thinking of going with a second card in a 2008 3,1. Possibly with a 570 card. Is there a specific card that someone could recommend?
