I was hoping to ask everyone's opinion about whether or not I should sell my G5 2.5 DP w/ 1.5 GB of RAM and get a Macbook. Looooooong time visitor to this site and it's forums, first time asking for help/advice.

My wife and I are moving to NYC and are re-considering all our assets. After checking EBay, I think I can expect between $1,500 and $2,000 for the G5 (assuming I sell it before the new Intel MacPros hit in a few weeks). I could then buy a 2.0 Macbook, upgrade the RAM , use it as a portable, power my Dell 2405 and have a few hundred dollars for savings. I have a 320 GB external HD that I would keep - so storage wouldn't be a problem. Having a portable in the city is desirable.

I do a little amateur video work w/ the PM, so the only real performance hit (I think) would be in rendering. I have read that the new MacBooks are great little machines. I don't play video games with the PM.

So I guess I'd like to know if you would make the move to the MacBook or enjoy the next few years w/ the PM? Am I missing something that would make this a major boneheaded move? This thing really is my baby, but the idea is starting to appeal to me.

I would value any and all feedback.

Thanks x 1,000,000

well in my head, there's no doubt that the G5 you have now will be more powerful than the MB. BUT, needless to say, the MB is a great little computer - it's speedy and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed by its performance. I love mine.

I'd say that considering the savings, the appeal of portability, and the fact that the MB can definitely hold its own, I might opt to make the same trade.

good luck with your decision!

Yeah, the MacBook may seem a little slow at first, but you should quickly get used to it. Also if you plan to do video work with it you shold definetly get 2GB of RAM if you can.

The major thing you have to deal with is the 13" screen. You are probably used to a bigger screen. I guess you can use your old screen so that might solve that problem.

I do notice websites load a bit quicker on my g4 mini with 512 ram then my macbook with 2gb of ram. It not my much, but it is something i noticed. But in the long run you will be happy with your choice if you switch to the macbook.

I would try to sell the G5 quickly, once the intels are out you are going to lose 300-500 on the system.
