I am using a external SSD for storage on my iMac (Catalina 10.15.7) but when I want to remove it from the USB port and click on 'Eject' the red LED on the SSD remains solid, although the drive icon disappears from the desktop. When I plugged the SSD in, this morning, I received a message to the effect that it had not been properly ejected. Am I doing something wrong?

What SSD are you referring to? I have several Samsung T5 SSDs that I use for CCC backups and when I eject them, the light turns red for several seconds and then goes out. I can safely eject them when the red light turns off. If the red light remains on, it means the SSD is still busy.

If you're in doubt, do a "Force Eject" and then check the SSD with DU.

there
OSX will never eject a external drive if an app suing that is open or a file.
many times the MacBook air won't eject a external hard drive were i need to force eject, or just unplug the drive knowing everything is good to go, and that friendly working pops up.

the problem could be your hard drive, you could run a first aid check through disk utility,
something windows does not have that easy to access.

Thanks for the input. The SSD is a Pioneer APS-XS03. I've just thought, I have three of this model so I'll try one of the others, or both, and see if it may be a problem with the SSD. Off for some shut-eye, now, as it's 3 am. I'll report back tomorrow. Cheers.

on the land line mr. smith.
To be sure that all files are closed to safely eject a drive, logging out or rebooting resolves everything. Less than ideal sometimes, but effective.

Force quitting the Finder can work too, if Force Eject does not, but could interrupt other processes unintentionally and inelegantly.

If you're using CCC or other app it may be that you're not being asked to eject 'both' or 'all ' volumes. This applies to APFS file system. Are you using APFS and if so you have to select eject 'all' volumes when prompted.

Sorry about the delay in replying, but I've been otherwise engaged for the last couple of days. Anyway, seem to have it sorted. If I click on the 'eject drive' tab and then remove the drive physically, it seems to be. O.K, whereas previously I was clicking eject, but not removing it until I had shut down. Don't know whether this makes sense. Thanks to all, anyway. I have another question, now, which I will put in another thread.

Hi O,

On Big Sur I’ve tried this and works every time, when a external drive is stuck:

Log out then back in again. Then do the eject.

Cheers

Hmmm...knowledge to know for the future and for others....
