So I recently got an iPad 12.9, and now I'm hearing rumors of an update to the Pro's may be coming in the next couple of months or so, potentially weeks with the rumored iPad/watch event. So the question is should I return my iPad (would have to do it tomorrow) and wait and see if an update is released? I can happily do with or without it for a short time but don't want to be in the position of having bought one only for an update to magically arrive a few weeks later.

Additionally what is likely to be updated? An A14x/RAM?, Mini Led? or is this all much ado about nothing?

No, don't return it. There is a chance that the new iPad Pro wont come out next month.

The iPad Pro just had a major redesign in 2018, I doubt if the next one would be anything but an incremental improvement. The current low end iPad can run every single app in the app store. Your iPad Pro is no slouch, it is the latest and greatest iPad there is and will be supported for a long time to come. I bought the ill fated and underpowered iPad 3 so I definitely understand your quandri. I still side on keeping your current one.

Yeah I was burned (almost literally) with the 2011 MBP 15”.

No new iPad Pro this year. The event will cover the non-Pro iPads, watch 6, and iPhone. But this is your money so do what your gut tells you.

Return it. You said you can happily do without for a short period. There is a chance a new 12.9 iPP is coming, you don’t sound like the person that would be ok if it does. Peace of mind is Priceless!

That iPad 3 tho, bought it too few months before the iPad 4 released -____-
The iPad Pro 2020 is 5 months now, there’s no guarantee Apple won’t do the same 2 release in one year.

But the question is, if you wait let say a month or two, and then turns out the iPad Pro is not getting refreshed. You’’re going to be in another limbo period, and facing another dilemma of buying the current one or wait until Q1 / Q2 2021?
We’ll never know.

The best way of making decision I read many where is: If you can wait, wait. If not, just buy and use it to finish your needs.

Max Tech on YouTube made analysis that the iPad Pro is going to be released in this year and sports an A14X. No info about mini LED.

Yep. The iPad is my primary personal computing device so I'd never want to go without.

Nowadays, getting top storage and cellular has gotten quite expensive though so I'm trying to make the purchase count hence the waiting to upgrade until a new model ticks off all my checkboxes. Either that or deep discounts on the previous model.

On Balance, I’m thinking I will return it for a couple of reasons.
1. I may need to get a bigger storage option
2. If I wait for October to pass and no new iPad Pro 12.9 appears then I’ve lost nothing.
3. There is evidence that there will be at least a spec bump so it’s worth waiting the extra month or two.
4. Mini Led being a possibility is a big draw for me - smart money says they’ll try it on iPads first.

Toss a coin, if you are disappointed in the result you know that is the wrong choice!!

You could've easily made this decision even without asking the group.

Return it...an ipad air could be the next thing but also there are 50% chances for the larger 12.9” miniLed
You need bigger storage so, return it and after next month you can buy another one

How much storage do you currently have? Keep in mind, with the USB-C port, hooking up an external hdd is easier than ever.

If you return your iPad Pro, keep in mind, most of the iPad Pro lineup currently is sold out. It probably won’t get any better for another month, perhaps longer (back to school + working from home.) You may be looking at well into the Holidays to get your hands on one (worst case scenario of course.)

2020 iPad Pro is less than 6 months old. A refresh would piss off a lot of people that have dropped well over $1500 including the Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil.

My guess is Mini Led would be tried on the ”consumer level” iPads first - so the current 10.2” (almost a year old), Mini 5 (almost 18 months old) and the Air 3 (almost 18 months old) would be first ones to get them rather than the iPad Pro. But maybe I am all wrong...

Cheers!

I just don't see premium display options becoming available on lower end models before the premium Pro models.

Chances are the refreshed Pro will support the current Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2.

Looks like you’ve already made your decision, but my 2c...there is not a single rumour from a trusted source about an Ipad Pro this year. You’ll be waiting until spring next year at the earliest for what should be a spec bumped and mini-led 12.9 Pro.

Personally I don’t see that many months of waiting and not enjoying this fantastic device worth it, but to each their own

I also noticed that the 2020 pros were delayed from late 2019, so that increases the possibility of another release this year, Apple would be unlikely to delay a product because of a previous one being delayed.

Max Tech makes a number of good points and helped sway my decision.

No issues with waiting until the holidays actually lines up well with my plans. In a sense a trial run of the iPad was what I needed to see if it could replace my 2011 MBP 15”. Also id probably want at least 256/512GB, I only had a 128 model and I’m not a fan of dragging around more accessories than necessary.

Personally I would keep at this point for a few reasons:

1. No rumours currently of a new iPad Pro coming before the end of the year.
2. If one comes with mini LED and the A14X chip it will likely have a higher price tag than the current models and will be an iPad Pro X or iPad Pro Max so they can maximise profits on it (similar time how they charged more for retina when it first launched).
3. The current supply of the current gen models has massive delays and in turn will likely substantially delay the release of the next version.

I personally don’t think we will see a refreshed iPad this year (I think it might have been planned, but the pandemic has put a huge spanner in the works), I think we will see the next pro update mid to late 2021.

With all the above said I am waiting until Tuesday before I order mine just in case.
