Well I got the iPhone 3GS, and with the 3.0 software update have had the added wonder of the two additional icons (voice memos and compass) which make a bit of a mess of my normal home screen layout - with only one screen of apps - I don't like the clutter of lots of apps I never use, the problem is now I have - in effect, space for a further 14 Apps that wasn't previously used (I use restrictions to hide iTunes and the App Store as I very rarely make on-the-fly purchases from these stores)

I am looking for apps that add functionality to either the iPhone or to a MacBook via wifi. I'm not really fussed about games, as they really just drain the battery and I like my devices to last at least a day away from home. I currently have the following Apps installed:
  • Google
  • Facebook
  • TwitterFon
  • Shazam
  • NumPad
  • Monkey Ball
  • Remote
Which leaves me with 10 spaces in the 2nd home screen still to be filled. The budget is less of an issue at this point. When the iDisk comes out, I probably intend to get this also, for file storage and the like.

If you have any suggestions for Apps that are useful on a daily basis - please let me know what they are, as I have given up on trawling through constant fart apps, features already on the iPhone and the like to try and find the occasional gold.

Thanks in advance

Wil

My new app is now one of my favorites ... MLB At Bat
Air Mouse (if you need it)
Air Sharing
Peggle
Urban Spooon
Pandora
Around Me

Some of the ones I have that I consider useful are:

The Weather Channel... we had storms last week and being able to look at the radar was wonderful!

AT&T My Wireless... useful to check acct balance and usage

PandoraBox... Lists what apps are on sale and what apps are new

i.TV... my tv guide, the only one we have so it is super useful to me daily

Bill Pal... reminds me when bills are due
BillMinder... another bill reminder app

AP Mobile... local and national news

Speed Test... just because I want to see my download speeds on wifi sometimes

Dictionary.com... dictionary and thesaurus, handy and easier than opening safari to search online

I guess most of my other ones are more fun than useful. I love that the iPhone can be both!!

Pocket Informant - event/task manager, it has become indispensible

Instapaper Pro - read articles offline

Oxford Deluxe - best dictionary/thesaurus app

Stanza - great ebook reader

Bodybook - workout log with graphs. No exercise how-to database (don't need it)

Photogene - rotate and crop photos great in this app

Photoforge - 'curve' tool great for pulling detail out of shadows

Readdledocs - easily download docs from email or Internet

Quickoffice - doc creator and editor

1Password Pro - locks passwords, creditcard info, etc, also automatically logs you into sites.

Momo - password lock note taking app. Full search. Tags.

Groups - organize contacts into groups. Easy interface. Organizing is a pain with headers hiding contacts names (gotta change groups and then go back to a group you're organizing).

Maildash - send precanned messages via email or messages app. Great while driving.

Beejive IM - best IM app

Pocketmoney - supports multiple accounts, and it's good for fast on the fly entries. Google graphs not great though. Inbuilt graphs coming in an update someday.

Listomni - great for lists and checklist. Email back up.

There's a list of apps I find functional. I've got a lot of games as well, but since you're not so interested in games, I didn't listed those.

i.TV, Flashlight [by John Haney Software] , Fandango, AP Mobile, Free Translator (comes in handy more than you'd think) [by Codesign or the one by Qsoft], Sol Free Solitaire [by Smallware], and Sudoku Free [by Mighty Mighty Good Games].

The problem with Free Translator is that you won't be able to use when you need it, will you (like if you were over in France)?

If you like them, also NY Times and USA Today. Both have very good apps. I think the LA Times may have one as well. The AP is the best of all because it has so much info.

Bejeweled and Arcade Bowling are great, cheap time-wasters. If you're worried about your battery life, buy an external one that gives you more juice.

Kindle reader is great if you want to experiment with non-free eBooks
Gas Cubby is a badass gas/mileage tracker
Shopper is a great shopping list app
Fandango is good for checking movie stuff
ooTunes is GREAT for radio streams

Everything else I recommend has been mentioned. Some apps you just have to spend money on and they're worth it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

Photoforge is a great tool for editing the pictures you take on the iPhone.

Bebot FTW! :)

In terms of games, (as mentioned) Bejewelled and the infuriatingly infuriating Flight Control...

If you're into SSH, TouchTerm is great for remotely accessing other machines.

If in the UK (and on O2), Allowance is good for checking your current call/text balance.

Pano allows the creation of panoramic photos. I bought it as a novelty thing, but it does a great job.

TV Guide is a good UK-focused version of iTV.

I recommend Prowl. It's extremely useful - even more so if you have a desktop machine which is on alot.

Also iTweetReply, a basic (but useful) app which instantly pushes a notification to your phone when someone has replied or DM you on Twitter.

You really ought to consider adding RunningTotal to that list. If you don't mind the limitation that it doesn't spill your financial information all over the Internets, it's a pretty good tool for keeping track of accounts, monetary or otherwise. In all modesty.

Loop't - Cool social network app. Really only cool if you're other hip iPhone using friends have the app. I also like it bc my brother works there!

Wells Fargo (or your bank) - If you do banking with a large bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, I'm not sure the others, they have iPhone apps that are very useful. With the WF one, I can check to see where the closest ATM is, my balances, transfer funds, etc.

Remote/Keynote Remote - For controlling your computer's iTunes or Keynote presentation via your device. Remote is awesome, Keynote remote lags sometimes if you don't have perfect wifi connection which throws you off during a presentation, but when it works it is great!

Now Playing- Crowd favorite. Shows movie times, movie ratings (from a list of sites you can choose from), netflix cues, previews for movies, pretty much everything movie related.

Light- 'nuff said

Jetman Jack- You said you don't like games bc of batter well Jetman Jack (which happens to be my app, yea a little self promoting, sorry) is a simple app that drains very little battery life. Based off the hugely popular Helicopter Game and/or Jetman on Facebook. Simple, yet wildly addicting 8-bit version. It is basically like iCopter, but the graphics are much better and it is the only version that got the controls to match and even exceed the original games. Help support a struggling college student!! www.itunes.com/apps/jetmanjack
