I'm kind of in the same boat. I live in Taos New Mexico and AT&T has no service here. My current carrier is Verizon and I have been off contract for 3 years with an OLD OLD simple phone. AT&T has stores in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and an Apple store in Alb. My area code has just changed to 575 while Santa Fe and Alb remain 505. There is AT&T service in Raton about 50 miles away but no store - there area code also changed to 575.

I need a smart phone and am hoping that with the SDK release in Feb the iPhone will do what I need. The question is would I be better off just getting a Blackberry with Verizon or getting an iPhone and either activating it with a friends address in Santa Fe or Alb and use it in Taos or hack it for T-Mobile which does have service in Taos. I doubt AT&T will ever be in Taos. What kind of activation questions are there? Could I even activate it with someone else's address, etc. I don't even know that )-:

Anyone mind giving me their thoughts please.

I have been a lurker on Macrumors for a year but have to admit I have no idea on how to do the hacks, etc.

Thanks for being kind (-:
