The Land DownUnder
Hi guys, I'm using a 2021 MacbookPro M1 pro on Ventura 13.5.1 and have problems trying to add two security keys to my AppleID. I'm hoping someone else may have encountered this, and fixed it! Both keys are new: one is a Yubikey 5Ci, the other a Trustkey T120. Both have generated the identical two error messages, and swapping the C ports have made no difference. Both keys seem to be working.

Error 1. Yubikey. I pressed Add. The process began (and I am not totally sure of the sequence here), but got error 'could not identify security key' > Keyboard Assistant with the message 'if you have another USB attached which is not a keyboard, you may quit' with the options to Quit or Continue. I pressed Quit, which took me right out of the process. Several attempts later, the same result so I pressed Continue. It told me to press Shift + the key to the right of Shift (z) and then got the error message 'could not identify keyboard.' I tried with the Trustkey which generated the same 'could not identify the security key' but (sorry), I am not sure now, after trying for a week to sort this, I cannot remember if it also brought up the Keyboard Assistant issue. I closed down the laptop and gave up. Coincidence or not, when I tried the Yubikey the following morning I got Error 2 and I now cannot recreate error 1 in order to confirm the sequence.

Error 2. Identical error message with both keys giving the same "Error! Cannot Register Security Key." I called Apple Support. First guy tried for an hour but couldn't fix it so another more experienced one tried. He viewed my screen, couldn't fix it, screen captured the final error message, then video captured the entire process, both of which plus the logs are now uploaded to Apple. No idea how long it may take for them to come back to me but has anyone else has had this issue or any ideas how to solve it?

Unsurprisingly, search my Mac does not find any trace, system does not show either USB attached.

Last question - I'm using Time Machine. If I restore an earlier backup, would TM restore any settings I could have somehow accidentally changed that have caused this?

Thank you for your time and patience!
