Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum so hello and nice to meet you all :) Great resource but my questions prompted me to join instead of just reading...anyway on to my questions:

I'm not new to hacks as I've hacked things in the past like my PSP / DS / Xbox 360 etc but when it comes to the iPhone I've got a few concerns. These will most likely be basic questions but I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction anyway:

Q1. If you jailbreak an iPhone 3gs do any of the services work incorrectly?... The reason I ask is I'm from the UK and I have a contract with 02. I've still got about a year left so I want to make sure that by jailbreaking my phone I'm not going to cut off any existing services... (I'm thinking things like visual voicemail, and any wi-fi / edge related services)?

Q2. Would 02 be able to detect that my iPhone had been jailbreaked and would this result in any kind of trouble aside from the usual? Like might they terminate my contract or something?

Q3. Finally, is it possible to completely factory restore your iPhone if the jailbreaking process goes wrong or you need to send it in for a replacement due to a hardware failure?

Thanks guys and my apologies if this has already been posted, I used the search but found nothing regarding 02 users.

O2 isn't different from any one else, not sure why you'd think there are different circumstances or problems if you are with them.

1.Not really, though some people who unlock as well complain of wifi, gps and push issues. (but you wont need to unlock if you are staying with 02

2.No

3.Yes, very easily

@pixelated

Hey man, thanks for answering my questions.

That helps a lot. I have been looking around the forum a bit while I was waiting for a response and I realise how I must look like a 'please spoonfeed me n00b' haha! Sorry about that, I feel kinda bad about it ^_^!

I basically really want custom message tones and ringtones.. and it seems like jailbreaking is the only way to achieve this (I know you can do ringtones other ways but I want to get message tones :D!)

I've checked and I'm on version 3.1.2(7d11) with Modem Firmware 05.11.07 and I use a macbook pro with the latest itunes installed so I think I'm ready to try this when I get home from work tonight. I'm going to research it a LOT before I even attempt it though because although the process itself seems simple enough I want to find out whether to use blackr4in or pwnage etc and what other benefits it will bring.

Anyway thanks for your help, greatly appreciated and sorry again for any naivety (sp.) :D!

No worries, at least you can ask a question in a clear way unlike many posts.
Pwnage tool is said by most to be a more stable JB. I on the other hand have had many problems with pwnage tool and have used blackra1n multiple times without incident, just my 2 cents
also, if it's tethered you will need blackra1n to boot it up anyway, but you should read all you can, and don't be afraid to experiment... It can always be restored .

the iclarified interweb is also a good source for information the link below is a tutorial that shows you how to jailbreak you iphone 3gs using a mac ;)

i agree with pixelated, pwnage tool is more stable than blackra1n and if hacking is something that you enjoy then you will struggle to put the iphone down after jailbreaking it!!

happy breaking :)

Thanks, clarity is key when asking questions ^_^

I'll take a look at both, see which one seems best for me. I have seen a few guides were people have said check your firmware version etc and check if you are tethered or not... I'm guessing that's just the tethering option you can get that lets you use your iphone internet with a pc/mac. If that's the case then I'm good to go as I don't have it and don't want it :]

It seems a lot of effort to go to just to change a message tone but I'll have a read up. There's something awesome about having the 'codec' sound from 'Metal Gear Solid' playing when I get a message haha! Must have it!

Thanks again!

Hey Bl0ckhead thanks for the link, I glanced at one similar to that earlier today. It seems really straight forward judging by that guide. The only bit that confused me was the part where he downloaded packages from Cydia. He chose OpenSSH and OpenSSL... what are those? If I jailbroke mine should I just select those two?

I'm doing this a little bit wrong anyway because I'm researching the process of jailbreaking before actually seeing what it allows you to do ^_^! I thought the Cydia bit might be where you chose packages relating to custom hacks (Like I imagined there would be a list of things like 'Enable Custom Ringtones App' etc... but it doesn't seem as straight forward as that :D).

Also the partition size part.... how big should I make that? I've got a 32GB Iphone 3gs, I would guess that the partition size is how much space you have in which to run hacked apps etc right?

Other than that everything else seemed pretty straight forward, as I understand it you bundle the packages you want, create the update file...send your iphone into recovery mode then use itunes to force a system restore but you are tricking it into using the custom firmware package you compiled. Am I right :D? (ish)

Thanks again for responding guys

No, that refers to a tethered jailbreak, not tethering as in using your 3G connection for a laptop.

If your 3GS has new bootrom, your only option to jailbreak will be Blackra1n.

Read these two threads:

Bootrom info

Tethered jailbreak

ahh right I understand it now :D Thanks for the clarification dhlizard. So basically if I've got the older iboot then I'm good to go but if it's the updated one then I'm stuck with the crappy tethered option which I will avoid :D!

So if I have the older one then can I use the guide that bl0ckhead posted?

n.b seems a bit silly that they name it tethered jailbreak when it has another meaning in the context of iphones eg (tethering service offered by 02 etc..) :]!

Thanks man, I'll see what version I have tonight

Well, it is a bit confusing, but in life many terms have multiple meanings. If you have the 359.2 bootrom (use the link I gave you to verify if you are not sure) you can use Pwnage Tool or Blackra1n to JB (I really recommend PT)

The best tutorials are on Hackintosh and iClarified.

Always choose set up as new, not restore to backup if you want a trouble free phone (it is a little more work, but worth it)

Leave official sim in phone during jailbreak if you don't need to unlock.

In Pwnage Tool, 3GS icon is phone all the way to the right

Make sure not to check the activate phone box if using official sim

Answer no when asked if phone has been pwned before, even if it has been.

I doubt I will have the older one as I bought my iPhone in about October of last year (I think it was then) so it's probably the newer one but there's only one way to find out I guess!

I'll keep you posted, thanks for your guidance so far man :] all of you actually :)

Well right about the 37th to 40th week is when the factories switched to the new bootrom, so you could be OK.

Check the 3rd, 4th & 5th digits of serial number

3rd-year-should be a 9
4th & 5th-week of manufacture (you want as low as possible)

XX937 as an example

Wow you're good man ! :>

its XX937 lol... is that bad then or should I do the other check to be certain?

Right I've checked the boot rom by putting it into DFU mode... my bootrom version is [359.3]

Is that good? I seem to remember the one with a 2 at the end is bad and needs a tethered jailbreak... I'm guessing mine means I can use the iclarify method posted above and have an untethered jailbreak :D? am I right?

Guess I typed a 2 instead of a 3 (should read 359.3)

You will have an untethered jailbreak. It's the best !

Awesome :D! Right tonight might be the night, I'll see how brave I'm feeling :]

Thanks again as always :)
