Advice Selling PC:

Hello Dear Mac People!


I am an architecture grad student and last year I did what i never thought i would do: i bought a monster desktop pc. I spent $3500 bucks on it, and it's served me quite well!

But after a line of apple computers, starting with an apple IIc and presently with a macbook pro, a desktop pc was a somewhat sad necessity. HOWEVER, with the summer upon me and desktop computing at a minimum, I am considering selling the desktop machine in anticipation for the new mac computers to arrive.

TROUBLE is: i've never sold anything in my life!!! i have no idea how to do it!!

It is an XI computer, a very reputable costom builder of cad machines, it was purchased this past july, and was loaded with cutting edge components.


How best to sell this computer?

I have time: I have soem resources, but I'd like to make it relativly painfree. The only problem with the computer is that it might need a replacement fan. I can put that in myself, it's loaded with software.....



.....any suggestions on how to sell this thing? i bought it for 3500 ten monthes ago, and i just checked the website and the same computer would cost about 2500 now....


how the **** do i sell a used desktop pc?

You dont want to consider ebay??
If you do: just set a reserve price that you are comfortable with and if doesnt sell then you can try some other means of moving it.
OR
Post it at the school your @. There are other architechture students that would be looking for a system to work on.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! NOT a student. DO NOT let a student get they're hands on that machine. PLEASE for the love of god PLEASE!!!!! Don't ruin they're life!!! A student generally needs a computer that works.

Do you really need a Mac if this is still a monster of a computer?

I'm just trying to help you realise, you might not require a new computer?

Knowledge is wisdom are two different things. You knew that Windows is a spawn from hell, but you didn't have the wisdom to not go there.

I actually already have a macbook pro --i need a desktop as well as a mobile computer... it's just that if i can have both be mac's, while still supporting a need to run windows software well, i'd rather do that! it's easier in nearly every way.

Yeah, I think it's actually worse than new cars. Just drive it off the lot and it's devalued by about 25%. Amazing that Macs can generally hold their value longer.

To the OP since you billed it as a CAD machine instead of a gaming rig, have you considered asking any of the people/companies that do the same kind of work as you in your local area if they might be interested in buying it. Note that in an ideal world you'd probably only get 2/3 of the original price, so plan of selling your $3K machine for around $2K or less.

Now that Mac are Intel, look to see their resell value to drop. Why you ask? Because the chip refresh cycle is going to be faster. You buy a machine and new chips will be out within 6 months. Just take a look at the Intel road-map and you will see what I'm talking about. The current shipping Macbook Pro price point is going to drop considerably when Merom ships.

Well... then I guess you have to lay the burden on someone else, for your convenience. Sell it on ebay...... $1800 starting bid, $2500 buy it now. That's what I would do.

Then wait for the Mac Pro's to come out in august.
