I'm trying to figure out whether to keep my iphone, and I was hoping you all could give me some advice.
Like others in the NYC area I've had severe problems with dropped calls (upwards of 50%). After hours spent on the phone with AT&T's tech folks, I seem to be having a much better time of things, but only if I keep my 3G turned off. A genius bar worker told me that 30% dropped calls on 3G is average in NYC. (And that # is artificially deflated because every dropped call generates another dial when the person tries to call back).
Also, I've been told by two people (one of them an AT&T tech support staffer) that they had left me voicemail messages -- but I never had any indication that a message had been left. This is my biggest concern: what if work contacts are calling me and leaving me messages and I don't even know?
AT&T is at the point where they'll let me out of my contract for free. But there are lots of features I love about the iphone, and I can't tell if I should leave. I also have a Mac computer, and I'm concerned about problems synching my data and music with other non-Apple smartphones.
If I leave AT&T now, I can sell my iphone, switch to Verizon and get the Droid or something similar: I know Verizon has better service in NYC. But when the iphone eventually becomes available on verizon, i'd be stuck with the droid instead - for at least a year, it sounds like.
But if I don't leave AT&T now, I'm not sure if they'll give me the option to leave again. I've spent hours dealing with tech support and documenting dropped calls.
I really need a phone that works for my job. It's a professional embarrassment when people can't get in touch with me. What do you think: Can I trust the iphone if I leave it off the 3G setting?
