Advice sought: FPS for the distractable

Hey game gang,

I've been out of the gaming loop for awhile and I'm looking for some advice to help catch me up.

I'm a big fan of self-contained FPS's (don't always have internet access for MPRPG's) and am looking for something to run on a MBP with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB. The hitch is I have smallish blocks of time (half hour or so) where I can play so I'm looking for something with (1) frequent save points and (2) a not-too-focused plot line.

Help, please!

Bioshock and Not too focused story, oxymoron much!
That said it's only £14 on Steam but could be much cheaper on eBay.

Left4Dead isn't story focused and a campaign takes between 25 mins to an hour, but it's all online (you can play with bots but they're not useful).

That's probably the lowest-ranked requirement for me - at worst, I'll spend a lot of time being lost .

Just played Call of Duty modern warfare 2 this week.

Enjoyed the game play. Non stop action.
Story is too fragmented to keep track.

There are also non-campaign levels where you can play a level to beat your own time. Most of the single levels are like 5-15 minutes.

Doom 3 and Quake 4 are both fun shooters, not to heavy on plot, broken up into sections and you can save whenever you want.

I especially like the part where you mentioned an FPS game for a Mac/PC.

They're kinda good. Though once I was finished with them I didn't play them again. But they're good (and cheap). Prey is in a similar vein to these too and that's a bit more experimental, and dare I say fun.

Modern Warfare 2 is OK, but I enjoyed COD4's plot line far more. Not sure it meets your "not too focused" requirement though.

PS-Spec ops in MW2 would probably fit the bill. Those are a blast.

Thanks to everyone for the great tips. I appreciate the time and thoughtful answers - you're saving me a lot of floundering.

I think the original Doom was the last one I played (oh, way back when it was the hot new thing)

I'm thinking of taking COD or MW out for a spin first (because it sounds like they're easy to compartmentalize), and maybe grab Doom 3 or Quake 4 for backups. Which leads me to my follow-up... what's the least expensive way to pick these up? Are legit downloady game sites the way to go now, or is it still best to grab a hard copy (get some resale value out of it?)? If hard-copy is the way to go is there a good place to start looking for deals? How much of a crap-shoot are used games (say, from ebay)?

I know you said FPS, but I can't help recommend this game.

If you're a Road Warrior fan you MUST download Flatout 2. Racing monster muscle classics and ripping the panels off of them. The sound effects and physics and feel is just enveloping, add on top of that a Van Halen Pandora radio station and make Max mad jelluz 8O

I played this game at the highest settings on my MacBook 2.4ghz Aluminum without a single catch, it didn't even get hot!

This game is a little old so it should sell for cheap

Ebay used is always a crapshoot, if your local store does second hand then you have some comeback if they don't work. Doom 3 and Quake 4 have no serials so you can resell if you get hard copies.

Mr Cheeto is very right , Flatout2 is very cool but for FPS I would say Prey & BioShock.are two very good games.Great thing is there are plenty of Mac Demo's to try in that genera so I would suggest go try a few fps demo's at apple.com/games go to the bottom left hand and look for Demo's and have fun.
